Hey, I never noticed that before....

Also not noticed by me until late in life was the fact that Shatner crunched his communicator when he rolled over it when they popped in. The grille is bent and stuck open in a few shots after he gets up. Also, Shatner has no heels on his boots in the fight scenes.

That rollover accident has been on my radar for like 15 years now. It's frustrating that they don't seem to make any mention of it on the site that tracks everything about TOS communicators:

Kirk's flat-soled boots can also be seen in "Plato's Stepchildren"

They're a great improvement over the lace-up boxer's shoes he wore in "Arena" and "Tomorrow is Yesterday" for the big brawl. A similar thing was done on Wonder Woman. Lynda Carter's red boots had tall spike heels, but a flat-soled pair was used for scenes with running.

In re: Wonder Woman

Actually, there were several pairs of flat-soled stunt boots, some for Lynda Carter, some for her stunt doubles, that were mostly used for fight sequences. By early in the second season Lynda Carter, like so many other actresses, had become adept at running in high heels, a talent that a surprising number of women have, and are proud of.

The Gorn makes me laugh every time I see him in that Kirk fight just the costume in HD just makes me laugh too much to take it seriously.

Spent my whole life looking at the Gorn in all sorts of definitions. I never had a problem accepting it, even though being aware of the limitations of the costume. It's a great piece of work, even 50 years later. What I never really accepted was the ease in which Kirk pushes that damned rock.

same bubble!
Very cool -- nice catch!

One thing that always bothered me about the Lazarus time ship, was how there was a removable bubble canopy with an arc in it, presumably for ease of entry, but no door! You never see it sitting off to the side or indication of retraction. And yet, the bubble canopy is shown off and on. I don't suppose that the detailed Bluray scenes reveal something more?
It does look like the seat is from the shuttle craft set.

The door could dematerialize and rematerialize, with a sort of replicator. That'd be all kewl and futuristic and stuff. :)

I never had a problem with Lazarus's ship. He had to slap together bits of primitive whatever... then work into it some sort of time travel device. It would be a mess, not a gleaming, streamlined, luxurious sort of thing. Looks weren't a consideration.

You mean....that paper mache rock. How about that other 'rock' that pins Kirk to the ground, yet when Kirk squirms around the 'rock' moves to and fro.

BTW, those rocks look like the same rocks used in Friday's Child.

I've always loved The Gorn since first seeing it back in 72 I think!

The Gorn was great because he was only just so menacing. If it had been like a Sigourney-style Alien that leapt at Kirk and killed him two seconds into the contest, and the Metron said "Wow, we thought that would take longer, and there'd be some dialogue and a moral, but whatever..." and then Spock had found an exploit or hack that destroyed the Metrons and allowed the Enterprise to escape, Star Trek would have been a very different show.

A lot of shows are super-dark and gritty today: Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Westworld, Emerald City... the list could go on and on. I wonder if the new CBS Trek, STD, will be like that.

Until it's revealed that the Metrons had actually abducted the wrong Kirk. The whole time you're rooting for him and it turns out he was a replica or something. Wrong Trek series?

That's a sensational idea! But maybe we're not even rooting for him. In part 1, Garth of Izar impersonates Kirk and takes his place as captain. Spock has no idea. Things look pretty bad. In part 2, the Metrons whisk Garth-Kirk off the bridge and he is promptly eaten by the Gorn. Then real-Kirk escapes confinement and returns to the Enterprise, and he's like, "Did I miss anything?"

It annoys me no end when my family see The Gorn and just laugh at him! When I was a kid he scared the life out of me and still has that awesomeness to this day I believe!
Oh, I thought the Gorn was a bit cheesy looking even back in 1967. I mean, it's a guy in a lizard suit. And the tunic worn over the lizard suit (necessary to hide the zippers and ventilation holes) reminded me of those "mod" dresses designed by Paco Rabanne.

But, hey, it's all about suspension of disbelief, right?
