I noticed it but never thought he was holding it backwards just weirdly like he has to keep it close or something. Like he was super concerned.
That explains why the photo in TMOST shows internal parts! I've always wondered what that was about, and suspected they faked the image to make it look like a "real" phaser. Nope. I've wondered that since I was a little kid.

I agree, but I didn’t want to speak ill of the late scienceprobevesseltransport Antares and the deserter who overstayed his liberty.
Once outside of the Talosian influence Pike would have reverted to being a cripple in his wheelchair with a battery driven heart! That or it was Chris's younger brother, Jeffrey Henry Herman McInnies Pike!

Spock was able to sense the Intrepid’s destruction and V’ger over many light years, I guess that psi-abilities in Trek must manifest through subspace or something.
