Peter faces unexpected consequences for his heroic acts and encounters a reluctant new hero. As Claire continues to adjust to college life, she must figure out how to deal with her ability having been revealed. Meanwhile, Samuel moves heaven and earth to recapture the memories of his late brother Joseph. Elsewhere, Matt struggles with his internal demons as Sylar mysteriously resurfaces.

Looks like Heroes has been moved to 8pm this year. Good thing I noticed. :rommie:

I liked the deaf person's power. It was kind of unique.

The Claire/HRG issues are starting to get old though. And Sylar in Matt's head, although interesting, is starting to remind me of Farscape (Harvey in Crichton's head).

I have to go Average. Everything that was interesting wasn't interesting this week. I understand they have budget cutbacks but enough with all this talking and exposition. It's not compelling. I did like the deaf woman's power though. Sylar whipped out some good lines and T-Bag's response to those people was vicious although that pretty much ends his moral complexity.

Peter's not exercising his brain (I know, big shock) with the way he goes about his business. Leaving too many clues for people to catch on to.

Well that was awfully boring. This set-up is certainly nowhere as interesting as it could be.

Pretty much everything here was a big meh from me. Sure the show is focusingless on the big action but the character stuff is dull as dirt. Putting a group of characters in a scene and talking isn't dramatic gold when the best you can do is the Claire/Gretchen/Noah lunch. Why they choose to drag out the fact that Gretchen is obviously behind the "suicide" and knowing so much about Claire is boring to watch.

Last week looked semi-interesting with Matt putting commands in people's heads but this week was a dull subplot for an already dull character. I don't even know why Matt was beating himself up about striking the thug. Sylar was messing with his head. I have no interest in Sylar and I find the way the writers have worked Quinto back into the series after removing his body from the series temporarily to be forced and tired. He needs to go too.

Louise Fletcher was wasted. Not looking forward to Peter hooking up with the deaf girl and I hope her ability doesn't turn out to be as silly or lame as it does at first blush.

The sinkhole was one of the show's least imaginative visuals.

*Maybe* a lot of this will look better in hindsight as the story furthers itself but I'm not holding out much hope.

I actually quite liked it. I'm a little confused about Samuel's power, though. He can manipulate the earth, so what's the deal with the ink? Does he have a secondary power?

I think the ink he personally mixes together must contain earth elements that he then manipulates hence the hand choking the guy last week or causing the compass tattoos to spin.

I'm not sure how it works with Lydia on her back. It seems she has divine knowledge which she then creates the tattoos on her back but if Samuel isn't accessing her thoughts I don't know how he could create her tattoo images. Maybe we'll learn more about it.

Doesn't ink have minerals in it?
Okay, didn't think of that. That would make sense.

I didn't think of it either. Someone posted in on TWoP. ;)

It makes sense though. His power is likely mineral manipulation.

I think he is a Hydrokinetic, with the ability to manipulate liquids. Aren't most sinkholes cause by underground water draining away? And Ink and Blood are liquids too.

And the deaf girl's power is straight from the D&D Psionic Handbook, Synesthete: 1st level: The ability to shunt one sense to another, to Hear or Feel Light or See or Feel Sound. It provides immunity to sensory attacks, like a Siren's song or a Medusa's Gaze without blinding or deafening yourself.

I really wish they had gone with their original concept of each season being a new story with new characters because I find myself really only interested in the new people.

No, his power is to manipulate earth. The show already made that quite clear.

I'll give this one an Excellent. This is what they should have done starting in S2 - show the characters trying to live normal lives with their powers, which inevitably leads to disaster regardless of whether they ignore them or embrace them. After that, we see the ways they manage to accommodate their inherently untenable situation.

Too much time was lost with distractions - new characters, bopping all over the world, hysteria and pointless action. This kind of focus on the characters really needed to have happened early on, to build a foundation for the story and give them a direction to go instead of years' worth of wheel-spinning and plotlines to nowhere.

Of course, it also helps a lot that Tracey and Hiro were nowhere to be seen. :rommie:

The deaf woman's power is interesting, though I'm not sure yet what purpose it serves in the story.

The writing for Samuel was very deft. He zeroed in on exactly how to manipulate Peter. That shows a highly intelligent and scary person, regardless of his tendency to generate sinkholes.

And Matt definitely needs to take a page from the Dexter Morgan playbook. He can't follow conventional notions of morality so he needs to develop his own unique Code to live by.

Great stuff, hope they keep it up and this isn't all just because these are Bryan Fuller-influenced episodes?

I don't even know why Matt was beating himself up about striking the thug.
Police brutality, for starters. Matt would have lost his job, been sued into the poorhouse and probably would have ended up in jail himself. Plus it shows that he isn't in command of his own powers and regardless of whether he's a cop, would be a public menace till Sylar is out of his head.

If that's even possible - I don't think that is Sylar. I think that's Matt's own self-inflicted Greek chorus. Sylar's consciousness never left his body because nobody on this show has the ability to extract consciousness from one body and insert it into another. Matt's never been able to do that.

No, his power is to manipulate earth. The show already made that quite clear.
He said he learned he had the power to manipulate earth, but not that that was the end of it. Later, he found out that he could manipulate all forms of minerals. Works for me.

I was really pleased. Samuel is shaping up to be a fascinating and well rounded villain, whose skills extend far beyond his (surprisingly versatile) power.

Other things I liked:

- HeadSylar is a manipulative genius. That was great stuff. The Temptation of Parkman continues!
- HRG starting to treat Claire as an adult (okay, even though she is clearly, not yet an adult.) Good character stuff there.
- Peter, acting the way Peter should have acted ages ago. I'm beginning to think we may have seen the last of .... nope, don't want to jinx it.

Robert Knepper's ability to exceed what's on the script makes it look like he's on a different TV show than everyone else. It'd be like a movie starring Chris Kattan, Rob Schneider, Freddie Prinze Jr., Chris Klein, Josh Hartnett and Channing Tatum, and suddenly you add Tom Cruise and Tom Hanks to the mix.
