Abysmal season, but decent finale yet again

Sylars "face" turn seemed so rush, he will always be a heel in my eyes. This probably isn't the most apt comparison, but at least in Buffy, Spike's turn to good was an evolution for him. Forced by the chip at first, but then he eventually seeked out a soul in the name of love

But with Sylar having Nathan's contients or memories of being a good person and I guess Matts influence if being a good person is enough to set him on this self healing and purge his evil ways? The whole thing was just sloppy, contrived convenience just for the sake of it. The episode he turns evil again for the what? third time it will be will just be a slap in the face. Again.

I did like the very end though with Claire being the one to out everybody, although NBC sort of ruined it with there promos of the last 3 episodes for the season

I kind of sort of liked how they handled the Charlie thing and wasn't a total cop out. Hiro was being selfish and delusional as usual though. This close from making Sally ceasing from existing

It was strange how they had Ali Larter come back to do just that. Tracy has become the best incarnation of the 3 characters though, although I didn't mind Jessica

Hopefully Volume Six: Brave New World will be the best season next to The first one and will be a total bookend, just wrap the show up already, just not on this note

we need to see some fallout from this last scene or at least I do, but if the show didn't get renewed it wouldn't be a total loss

you'd think the police would have shut down the carnival sooner, at least arrouse suspician, appearing out of nowhere, probably no permits, noise ordinance, that sort of thing

Heh well the most telling sign of the lower budget was the opening shot of this episode with Lauren at the now vacating old Carnival site behind a green screen worthy of a Sci-Fi channel low-budget Sat movie.

^Really? I thought it was just shot during "magic hour," when the sun is coming up, so it had a bit of that surreal lighting. Things shot at that hour can come off looking fake since we're used to the sun lighting everything from above, not the side.

I thought it was pretty lame. What an action-free finale. The entire carnival situation was resolved by Claire giving a speech and then Hiro teleporting everyone away. Not exactly what I'd call a nail-biter, but kind of fitting for a very talky and lethargic season. If this is the last episode of the show, then talk about going out with a whimper instead of a bang.

They might as well put a fork in it, since they've pretty much wrapped it all up. The only thing they can do next year is more persecution stories (oh noes, power users are evil, stop them) or a lame X-men thing.

NOAH: "Where's Tracy?"
LAUREN: "The writers have no idea how to write for her, so she's not coming with us to prevent Samuel from killing everyone in New York... even though that sort of looks really bad on Tracy's part."

CLAIRE: "Samuel is going to kill everyone!"
PLANT GUY: "Outside of killing everyone in that small town in cold blood, why would he do something like that?"

Quote for the day:

"If you take sci fi secrecy and calculated confusion to the furthest intersection on the horizon, you end up with the television series Heroes. I was thrilled to be a part of it for season two in the role of Bob Bishop, the man who could turn things to gold, but for the life of me I still have no idea what I was doing. And truly, I don't think anyone else had any more of a clue than I did. I came to believe that the madness was the method. Being on Heroes was like being in one of those comedies where the leading man wakes up hung over with a woman in his bed and a walrus in the bathtub, and he shakes his head and says, 'I did what?'" -- Stephen Tobolowsky, from his podcast series on /Film

His account of how Heroes was run during his time there really explains the end result. If you want to listen to it, it starts about halfway through the podcast. He points out how Heroes doesn't have an Act II or Act III, they just repeat Act I.

They should end the whole series on that. The Claire jump was a suitable bookend and leaves a decent open-ended finale. Easily the best episode of the whole season, even if it wasn't fantastic and was full of contrivances. Sylar in particular was a total asspull - all they had to do was build to him turning more steadily and attributing it at least in part to containing Nathan's memories/personality. Oh, and the total nonsense that Samuel had no powers at all despite at least 6 specials still being in the carnival and being able to sink that town without a whole cadre of carnies at his side.

Still. Not as bad as it should have been, Charlie-plot wrapped in a decent matter as well. That'll do for Heroes thanks.

Because of the "is it the end?" question, I got together with family to watch this. My mother, who is not normally the most observant viewer, started laughing at the Tracy scene. I'm referring specifically to Tracey grabbing Noah, asking "Can you swim?" and dragging him back to the surface.

I asked what she thought was so funny, since it's not in any way comedic. Her response: "I've always heard the phrase 'Jump the Shark' but I've never watched it happen in front of me, but check it out." Mother dear was right.

One of the better episodes. This season could have easily been done in 13 episodes and used a few more drafts before going to production. It would have kept it off of life support for half the season.

And no Christopher Eccleston (that I could see ;)). Bummer.

i also thought they did a pretty good job casting an actress to play the older Charlie, not only did she look a lot like Jayma Mays with the big doe eyes and the red hair, but her inflection of how she talked on the show was damn near seamless too.

I was expecting her; when introduced to hero to go on saying... this is my son... he can.... and this is my granddaughter... she can...

I'm wondering what kind of powers they have?

Thanks for the link. Great podcast!

Loved the Charlie resolution. I had some strong Dr. Who vibes but maybe that was because of the timey wimey stuff. Ding. Hiro grew up just a little bit more from that experience also.

Hopefully they keep Sylar a Hero. The flipping is crazy so lets just leave him trying to do good and move on from here. Perhaps the last good thing he can do it kick Claire into permanent orbit so we don't ever see her again.

Samuel could have been a great character if they left him the helpful and nice person he seemed to be in the beginning. But they have to give everyone major flaws and destroy them. Oh well.

Overall a very MEH season with a few really great moments.

I could have done better. And Im just a guy in a basement. If NBC just likes to throw away good money Ill work for much less than whatever room full of monkeys they have. But then again NBC wouldnt want something well written would they?

That was an amazing job of casting. I had to look closely to make sure they hadn't used CGI or makeup to somehow age the original actress . . . ..

Definitely the best episode of the season so far, I suppose because they had so much to tie up there wasn't enough time for any more meandering plots. I like how they all teamed up towards the end, something that should have been done much more regularly.

But still with Heroes there are problems, Tracy was just lazy writing, a cheap plot device to get Claire and Noah out.

Samuel should have had some power because Claire, Sylar and Peter were still around, although I can buy him being so shocked at his family walking away that he surrendered. However if he needs that many people around how did he bury that house earlier in the season?

And it was lucky that Doyle could play the Cello (just moving your fingers like that wouldn't necessarily create good music).

If Heroes doesn't come back I won't really miss it, because I can see them repeating the same mistakes over again next season. But at least this episode wrapped a few things up and has a sense of closure.

The showrunners would never do it, but if Heroes were to come back next season, it would be interesting to see everything Noah warned about come true and have Claire be responsible for everything bad that happens to specials.
