Help name a starship?

Kuri

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
This might be fun for you all. I’m putting together a premise for another Trek fanfic unrelated to Uylsses, and have become stuck on the ship’s name. I’ve been very impressed with the names other writers here have come up with, so thought I’d tap into this rich resource.

Background: I’m thinking of a small ship something like the gryphon-class shuttle.

or this "fighter":..

Maybe slightly bigger, maybe slightly smaller, maybe a bit more TOS retro in look, but the keywords involved would be: small, sharp, fast, dangerous. It will go on short-term recon/scouting missions (and the crew at least, if not the ship itself, will get into more combat-style situations).

I often go for predator animal names, like wolf, shark, eagle, etc, so want to avoid that this time. It is too small for grandiose stellar names like Orion or Galaxy or other celestial phenomena. Similarly, noun-verb names like Enterprise, Triumph, Endeavour, Defiance, all sound like battleships to me.

I note that other ships of this type often get named after rivers, but that seemed a bit harmless and tranquil for me. Depends on the river name and how it sounds, I suppose. Trent?

I like @TheLoneRedshirt ‘s “Bluefin” and thought a bit about aquatic animals. Barracuda sort of fits. Stingray… just no.

I’m also thinking of the class – gryphon – and wondering about mythical animals or entities, like ghost, sprite, dryad, imp. Oni from Japan is another contender here. Pegasus or Unicorn… just no.:guffaw:

I like the idea of naming it after a weapon. Sword, dagger, arrow etc are a bit bland, but continuing on the Japanese theme, Shuriken or Katana might work. Tomahawk is a bit more blunt-sounding to me, but maybe OK too.

Then Onyx popped into my mind. It’s just a sharp little black gem.

The problem with all these names is that they are a bit too general, more like the names of classes of starships rather than individual vessels. So I started thinking about actual people’s names that carry a bit of sharpness in sound if not meaning. I came up with Kramer or Carnaghan so far.

So, the current contenders are,
Barracuda, Oni, Shuriken, Katana, Tomahawk, Onyx
(less favoured but perhaps more likely "in universe") Trent, Kramer, Carnaghan

I’m of course open to (and perhaps seeking) ideas from completely different areas of inspiration, too.

Whaddyafink?:vulcan:

@Sgt_G Agreed. consider Katana struck (it's everywhere - even an entire Star Wars fleet). That list was good. Bollock Dagger sounds... interesting. :guffaw:

Japanese Tanto is on there, but it's the name of a very common tiny cute car here, and I can't shake that image.

arrow etc are a bit bland

Sad face.

Well, the way Starfleet names their classes means that each class name is an individual vessel name too.

Piranha? Thresher?

Basilisk? Phantom? Spectre?

I like the idea of naming it after a weapon.

Rapier? Javelin? Takoba? Kaiken?

@Avro Arrow Gah, no offence intended! :alienblush:

That's true on the first commision often being the class-namer. I'll bear that in mind. In fact, that might tie in nicely to my plot. Thank you, Sir!

I like Spectre but perhaps it might provoke thoughts of Bond? Basilisk is a bit big. I did consider Piranha but reckoned they attack in swarms rather than individually.

Kaiken is cool!:bolian:

If it were for more covert operations then (along the same lines as Spectre) you could have: Ghost, Phantom, or Shadow.

Some other ideas I'm just throwing out there: Archer (as in someone who partakes in archery, not the buffoon, though this would depend on your timeframe as well), Banshee, Ranger, Valkyrie.

@Tribble puncher Eek! I'm a Tribble!:eek:

Ooh, I quite like Corsair. Spitfire hmmm. Crixus sounds nice but a bit WH40K.

Thanks!
I'm not really familiar w/warhammer40k, tried to read up on the lore, but wasn't feeling it. I was using the name "Crixus" in regards to a Gladiator who joined Spartacus's slave revolt in the 3rd servile war during the waining days of the Roman republic. Little is known of him, except he was eventually killed. He was a main charicter in the "Spartacus" T.V. series though.

Do something different: don't use names.

Really small craft tend to be so numerous in a fleet that it's easier to identify them by hull numbers, like PT boats. Just throw together a couple of numbers that sound right and call it that.

If it must have a name, make it an unofficial nickname. That way, mission, class, etc., don't matter. You could call the thing "Blushing Bride betty" and it would be just as appropriate as "Corsair" or "Arrow" or whatever.

It sounds like you have plenty of suggestions already. However, I'll add a couple to the mix.

Lusitania, Wolf, Marigold, Cyclone, Tornado, Bluejay, Fury, Storm Chaser, and Inferno.

Just a few off the top of my head. They might not meet with your criteria, however it's what my old brain box printed off at the time.

Small and dangerous? Stiletto. Hornet. Deathstalker (It's a small, deadly scorpion). For that matter, Scorpion. Irukandji (a tiny, excruciatingly painful-stinging jellyfish.)

Other katana-like blades that aren't katanas: Tantō, Wakizashi, Daito, Tachi, Naginata.

Thinking about this more, a "ship" this small probably shouldn't have a name, just a number. Perhaps a class-name and number, such as Gryphon-266, or just a letter-number designation like "PT-109", but for the story they use a mission call-sign, such as Dagger Team Four.

Yeah, see, go with the Sarge's idea! It's brilliant!

Part of the reason it wouldn't have a name (not official, at least) is because there would probably be oodles of them. It's like the PT-boats (and larger PC escorts) that there were so many there was no way to give them a name, or even B-17 / B-29 bombers with their nose-art.

 Sarge, pal...scroll up a couple of posts, willya?
