HBO's True Blood season one....spoilers, of course

Okay, so I just discovered this series this week on DVD, seeing as I'm poor and have no HBO. Waiting for season two to become available (I watch Dexter the same way). What are general impressions of its first season? I liked it a great deal, though it was a bit corny in places. I've never read the books, but I can't help but think that Anna Paquin is wrong for the part of Sookie. I like the character, but she seems like a fickle teenager to me far more than a young woman disturbed by the early death of her parents and her inability to shut off her reading of minds so that she knows what every horny, insensitive young prick around her is thinking. A positive outlook is one thing, but she's positively cheerleader baby sitter precious perky. Comes across as 17, not 25. The poor girl goes through hell, but I'm hoping the character matures.

Overall I like the vampires coming out of the coffin set up and that the vampires aren't cude and cuddly. The humor is top notch. That's a big plus for me. As a big time Supernatural fan I can appreciate the sick humor (Raelle Tucker used to be one of the headwriters for SPN). The standouts for me are Stephen Mowry, Sam Trammell's Sam, Rutina Wesley's Tara, Nelsan Ellis' Lafayette, and Ryan Kwanten's idiotically funny Jason. Lois Smith was a goddess, of course. Skarsgard was big time snooze as the supposedly mysterious Eric, and I loathed that Amy chick. She and Jason romping in the fields as they were high on V was overkill. I cheered when she got strangled. What was the point of them kidnapping and killing the fat accountant homo vampire? Jason's sexual misadventures are fun, but that was pointless.

Lafayette's "entrepreneurial" activities are a scream, and Tara's bitterness breaks my heart. She's such a damaged child. It's a realistic portrayal of how damaged the children of alcoholics are. I wanted to murder her self righteous mother when she refused to bail Tara out the first time she got into trouble. An intervention is the last resort, you worthless bitch. Bill's angst, while a bit cliché, resonated with me. I think Mowry is an excellent actor. Him birthing the bratty newborn Jessica was an ingenious turnaround after her traumatic death scene. The tribunal with that horrible magister was horrific.

The real standout of the cast for me is Sam Trammell. Sam is a classic unsung hero, unappreciated by Sookie (isn't that like a young chick to want the guy who makes her life hell instead of the dependable man?) but willing to help her anyway. I'm glad they had him hookup with Tara and not just wait around like a lap dog.....no pun intended. I can't believed I didn't see it coming before the gentlemanly pooch averted his eyes while Sookie was undressing. His attraction to her is pretty hard to swallow considering how badly she reacted to the reveal of his secret. What an ungrateful, hypocritical little vampire dating cow she is. She was kissing him after Bill had been gone only one night? Sam being abandoned by his parents is a heartbreaking bit of character history. I'm hoping the promise of his history with the obviously dangerous MaryAnne creature plays out as promisingly as it's been teased. Did she try to rescue him after his parents abandoned him like complete assholes? Sam's very reminiscent of a mellower sort of Dean Winchester character. Also, I can't wait to see what MaryAnn tempts Tara with in the guise of helping her out of a bad situation. What's up with her and that giant hog?

I can't wait to order season two. I hope it isn't all Bill/Sookie romance drivel. Any thoughts? Any fans here? Am I the only one?

I heard so much about this that I watched all in about a week when it came out on DVD. I thought it started out stronger than it ended and I found season two to be not as good as season one.

I like Sookie and Bill Compton a great deal. Those two have oodles of chemistry so no wonder the actors themselves are dating or engaged in real life. I think Anna Paquin is great in the role bringing just the right mix of vulnerability with hardy spunk. Tara was a whole lot of fun. I didn't care too much for Eric in season one but really enjoyed him in season two. The cast is great but I didn't find it all that well-plotted. Most of the stories felt like a means to an end instead of really exploring things. They'd just hop onto the next plot point.

I expected going in more of a drama but it had a habit of veering into camp which I've never liked in my sci-fi or fantasy which is probably why I never could get into DR. Who, SG1 or Buffy/Angel. It became a bit too over-the-top even moreso in season two which is saying a lot for a show with vampires and other supernatural creatures. I was disappointed with the reveal of the killer and his motives. I felt it really didn't build well to that point so in that regard it reminded me of Veronica Mars style season long murder mysteries which never really delivered.

I'm on the fence about whether I'm going to watch season three since I was underwhelmed with season two which sort of meandered and came to a fizzle in the finale. Michelle Forbes was the only thing great about season two and was sorely wasted. But if nothing else is on next summer I might tune in.

Sad to report in my opinion it really doesn't.

This was very promising I thought as well in season one working well as hooks for season two but I'm sad to report it was pretty weak where they went with it in season two.

Oh no. :( But, like you've said in the SPN threads, you tend to be a hard grader. Maybe I'll enjoy it more than you did? I've always liked Michelle Forbes. I really enjoy Anna Paquin and Stephen Mowry individually as actors. I'm just not sure I want a non stop diet of that tortured romance. The only thing about Sookie, like I said, is that she just comes across as way too young for my tastes.

Going into season two the romance is most definitely still there with more of the roadblocks one would expect including someone from Bill's past. Without going too much into season two I thought that the cast wasn't as used as well as they were in season one or thrown into dull plots especially Jason who unfortunately gets thrown into a pretty middling storyline and Tara who I thought was wasted. Eric gets a more prominent and interesting role than in season one. LaFayette who was great in season one isn't handled as well as I think his arc could have been.

Tara's wasted?
I thought so. She basically spends the season lovestruck being not herself without her trademark humor that I loved so much in season one.
Does Sam get anything interesting to do?
A brief romance which was alright but nothing too exciting and yes more is revealed about his past with MaryAnne but I found what was revealed to be underwhelming. He does a lot of running and hiding though:lol: And we get some more lovely shots of that ass of his so not all is lost:drool:

So you are susceptible to Sam's masculine charms? I knew it. He is good enough to eat. I'm surprised the vampires aren't wanting to munch on his delicious ass. I wish the SPN producers would let Padalecki grow out his hair some more and add a beard like Sam's. I love a man who isn't manscaped to death.

Literally:rommie: Are you sure you haven't seen season two yet?

*raises eyebrow* Why does that pique my gratuitous interest? No, I haven't seen season two yet. Interesting question there, Startrekwatcher. Does Jessica try to have her first feast? She seems the type to throw him backwards and tell him to assume the position with all her newfound freedom. Or is it Bill? :guffaw: That scene would be a slasher's dream. Heck, I'll have to give it a watch for this tantalizing possibility alone.

He has the perfect balance of masculinity while having a sweet charming side to him.

Sing it, my dear. Same balance that the character of Trip Tucker had. When you get the masculinity without the machismo, that's intoxicating.

Unfortunately it isn't anything that wonderfully debaucherous and it doesn't involve the vampires. Let's just say there is a character that thinks Sam might be good enough to eat or at least a certain part of him. How far they succeed I'll let you find out when you watch the season.

Yeah I just finished the first season myself, and while I liked most of the storylines and characters, it was a bit annoying how much they all just kind of... meandered about. I don't know if it's just Alan Ball's style, but the storytelling felt way too aimless and unstructured for my taste.

But still, there were a ton of great surprises and cliffhanger endings, and the bratty Jessica was an absolutely HILARIOUS addition. I really hope she hangs around for season two...

Me, too, Dave. Her pouting around about how mean Bill was to her was a riot. You never let me have fun. You suck! Oh yeah.....you do. Hee.

Having seen (and loved) both seasons. However, as much as I absolutely ADORED the crazy OTTness of the back end of season 2, I have to say I felt the finale was a bit of a letdown, but thats just because they built this giant situation over the past 3 or 4 eps and it kinda fizzles out too quick imo.

Ummmm, why is season 2 being discussed in a Season 1 thread????

Lots of people (myself included) won't see this until the DVD release...

I can't remember if this is in season 1 or 2 sorry, the Godrick story arc and conclusion fascinated me, strangely it is my favorite part of the series.
Also the perpetual vampire virgin girl was kind of funny, everything always heals

Seriously? Following a post that points out it's a season one thread, you thought it was an ok idea to post pretty much the entire plot of season two? And since there was an hour between that post and yours, it's not like you could miss it.

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

oooh I recently saw season 1 too & I cant wait for the 2nd season to come out on dvd! Sam is my fave too, I just love the character! The only thing is that I wish he didnt stalk Sookie so much, it makes him a bit creepy but I try to chalk that up to his protective canine nature that he cant help...I also like Bill, I like how old fashioned he is. I agree that Eric is boring, I dont get it, he's really popular for some reason. I guess well see why in the 2nd season. I too think theres something off about Anna in her role, maybe it is the age thing like you mentioned. I cant stop thinking of her as Rogue from X-men. Tara is ok but I think she can get a bit grating sometimes(ok lots of times.)

He does a lot of running and hiding though And we get some more lovely shots of that ass of his so not all is lost
YEAY! :techman:

I dont even like scruffiness much but damn Sam Trammel makes it look so sexy! Also I think they cast the perfect dog for that role, it looks so much like him.

Season One was great and you're going to love Season Two. I actually watched it all in one day without getting off the couch. That's how addicted I am.

Sorry, I honestly forgot where 1 ended and 2 started. But I made it so vague that if you haven't seen season two there is no real spoiler, I never gave anything away did I?
