Okay, so I just discovered this series this week on DVD, seeing as I'm poor and have no HBO. Waiting for season two to become available (I watch Dexter the same way). What are general impressions of its first season? I liked it a great deal, though it was a bit corny in places. I've never read the books, but I can't help but think that Anna Paquin is wrong for the part of Sookie. I like the character, but she seems like a fickle teenager to me far more than a young woman disturbed by the early death of her parents and her inability to shut off her reading of minds so that she knows what every horny, insensitive young prick around her is thinking. A positive outlook is one thing, but she's positively cheerleader baby sitter precious perky. Comes across as 17, not 25. The poor girl goes through hell, but I'm hoping the character matures.
Overall I like the vampires coming out of the coffin set up and that the vampires aren't cude and cuddly. The humor is top notch. That's a big plus for me. As a big time Supernatural fan I can appreciate the sick humor (Raelle Tucker used to be one of the headwriters for SPN). The standouts for me are Stephen Mowry, Sam Trammell's Sam, Rutina Wesley's Tara, Nelsan Ellis' Lafayette, and Ryan Kwanten's idiotically funny Jason. Lois Smith was a goddess, of course. Skarsgard was big time snooze as the supposedly mysterious Eric, and I loathed that Amy chick. She and Jason romping in the fields as they were high on V was overkill. I cheered when she got strangled. What was the point of them kidnapping and killing the fat accountant homo vampire? Jason's sexual misadventures are fun, but that was pointless.
Lafayette's "entrepreneurial" activities are a scream, and Tara's bitterness breaks my heart. She's such a damaged child. It's a realistic portrayal of how damaged the children of alcoholics are. I wanted to murder her self righteous mother when she refused to bail Tara out the first time she got into trouble. An intervention is the last resort, you worthless bitch. Bill's angst, while a bit cliché, resonated with me. I think Mowry is an excellent actor. Him birthing the bratty newborn Jessica was an ingenious turnaround after her traumatic death scene. The tribunal with that horrible magister was horrific.
The real standout of the cast for me is Sam Trammell. Sam is a classic unsung hero, unappreciated by Sookie (isn't that like a young chick to want the guy who makes her life hell instead of the dependable man?) but willing to help her anyway. I'm glad they had him hookup with Tara and not just wait around like a lap dog.....no pun intended. I can't believed I didn't see it coming before the gentlemanly pooch averted his eyes while Sookie was undressing. His attraction to her is pretty hard to swallow considering how badly she reacted to the reveal of his secret. What an ungrateful, hypocritical little vampire dating cow she is. She was kissing him after Bill had been gone only one night? Sam being abandoned by his parents is a heartbreaking bit of character history. I'm hoping the promise of his history with the obviously dangerous MaryAnne creature plays out as promisingly as it's been teased. Did she try to rescue him after his parents abandoned him like complete assholes? Sam's very reminiscent of a mellower sort of Dean Winchester character. Also, I can't wait to see what MaryAnn tempts Tara with in the guise of helping her out of a bad situation. What's up with her and that giant hog?
I can't wait to order season two. I hope it isn't all Bill/Sookie romance drivel. Any thoughts? Any fans here? Am I the only one?
