HBO: "The Leftovers"

I don't get the impression the writers care what caused the rapture event.

The thing I understand the least about this show is why they skipped the first three years. They just kind of leave us with the impression 'People just kind of went on in denial'.

People in general are far more willing to accept physics that aren't believable than they are to accept human behavior that isn't believable. And in the first two episodes, nothing about the behavior of any of the characters is even slightly believable. They better explain why people are just randomly up and leaving their families to join a directionless silence cult real soon.

Also they better give us a better explanation for this dog shooter's behavior than:
1) Shoot dogs
2) ?
3) Profit

The Leftovers... sounds like a show on the Food Network.

Isn't Lindelof a leftover now? After he's been fired from the Prometheus and Star Trek franchises for producing nothing but hot air...

Mention of the Food Network put me in mind of this. Perhaps the existential dread that the Event brought into people's lives fostered an abrupt break with a number of longstanding cultural norms, so maybe what's behind this dog killing is a not yet revealed emergence of a domestic market for canine cuisine??

I'm just riffing; still haven't seen the show.

What I understood from the two episodes that aired so far is that the showrunners don't care the event itself, but only for the consequences. Sort of like The Walking Dead isn't dealing with what caused the zombie apocalypse.

Too bad the only consequence we see is that people do random stuff for no reason because they saw that everything is random and life has no meaning or something.

What is up with people watching Damon Lindelof produced and written stuff just to rag on the guy? Just move on.

Exactly. There's no explanation given in the book, either, and I've seen interviews where the producers of the show say they have no interest in providing an explanation for the disappearances, as that's not something they consider a priority or the important story. It's all just about dealing with how people would react to an event of this magnitude rather than what caused the event in the first place. So if anyone's hanging around thinking they'll be getting answers of that sort, I wouldn't hold my breath.

It's based on a book and the book's author is heavily involved in the production and the premise sounded interesting, so I thought that even Lindeloff can't fuck it up too much.

It's weird to me how much people hate Lindelof solely because of the ending of Lost. Presumably these people enjoyed everything that came before the ending which was written by, gasp, Damon Lindelof.

I dislike him much more for Prometheus and the ending of WWZ. I don't think I've ever hated a movie as much as I hate Prometheus.

Well I loved Prometheus, but the "problems" with the film came from Ridley Scott as he directed what Lindelof was to write. Scott had a very specific vision for Prometheus and gave instructions to Lindelof on what he did and didn't want answered. In interviews, Scott himself has confirmed this and said the end product's success or failure should really be on him.

To hold any one person responsible for WWZ is a mistake. The making of that film is an incredible story in how a script can get thrown around so much as to be unrecognizable to the original writer (JMS). Lindelof was brought in after much of the movie had already been filmed and people were realizing it wasn't working at all.

As far as I understood, the last part of WWZ (everything after Jerusalem) is Lindeloff's work. I knew the movie had nothing to do with the book, but everything up to the last part was a pretty good thriller. The last part was just stupid.

And Prometheus - yeah, it's Scott's fault too. Still, Lindeloff had his part in the final product, and the final product was, INHO, terrible.

I don't mind that the question is not going to be answered. But if the characters are going to keep doing nothing but boring random crap and the show's ideas about human nature are cliche nonsense the show is going to remain unwatchable.

I think The Strain is going to guarantee I don't watch tonight's episode, but I don't have such high expectations of that either.

After the show my wife asked me what I think caused the rapture event. I couldn't help but think she hadn't learned anything from Lost. In other words, that's not the focus of the show--

But it if fun to speculate.

I guess the problem comes when it's more fun to speculate than to watch the show. But I do feel like each episode is getting progressively better, albeit more and more weird.

I agree with JirinPanthosa in that the characters' motivations seem odd and random.

So a somewhat interesting prologue episode, we learned what most of the characters were doing when the 'departure' happened. Kevin got 'cock blocked' LOL also we now know why the departures effected Lori enough for her to join the GA.
