Have you ever given up on a Trek series? If so, what was the last straw for you?

This has been a very revealing discussion thread. I would have assumed that the vast majority of commentators on this website would have watched most of the Star Trek series, but there appear to be many here who have barely touched entire series. I definitely fall into the latter category- I have watched many but not nearly all of TNG, a smattering of Voyager, a handful of DS9, one episode of Discovery, and four or so SNW. It occurred to me a few years ago (although I should have realized it before) that I'm not really a Star Trek fan, I am a TOS (+TMP) fan. Not a particularly profound realization, but I think it has helped make me a little more tolerant of others' narrow enthusiasms; I'm sure there are many Discovery fans out there who don't, and don't need to, give a damn about TOS, etc
Yeah, this is the key to enjoying the franchise, I think - accepting that the shows are all essentially standalone. The connections between any two given Star Trek series are extremely tenuous, sometimes nonexistent.

I'm a TOS and Voyager fan with mixed feelings about everything else. Sometimes mostly-positive mixed feelings, sometimes mostly-negative.

Though present however briefly in TNG and DS9's pilots.
I think TNG and DS9 had the closest connection. We saw the Enteprise at DS9 on more than one occasion. We had Enterprise crewmembers visit the station. We had Bashir visit the Enterprise. We had one main and two recurring characters from TNG transition to DS9. Worf then came back to TNG films and the Defiant appeared in First Contact. We had the Maquis storyline carried out between the two shows. There was discussion of the Dominion War in Insurrection.

I would say the TNG/DS9 connection was pretty solid.

Seeing this clip from the VOY episode "Flashback" again on the BBS today reminded me that it played a big part in me giving up on watching VOY regularly:

The scripting of the scene STILL bugs the hell out of me. The "Of course, the whole bunch of them would be booted out of Starfleet today" line is SO condescending and smug, and a pretty disrespectful thing to put into an episode celebrating the 30th Anniversary of Trek.

That, and me not liking the Sulu episode in general, made me realize that I wasn't really enjoying VOY very much and was mainly watching it because it had the words "Star Trek" in the title. I finally decided that two words being in the title was a pretty silly reason to watch a show I wasn't enjoying, so I stopped cold turkey.

(Later on, I went back and saw a lot of the VOY episodes I missed when they were airing late nights on H&I, and the show massively improved after Seven of Nine came on. So while VOY has definitely grown on me, but it's still not one of my favorites.)

So I started thinking about the other times I've gotten a bit fed up with Trek in the past & stopped watching:

I gave up on ENT somewhere in S3 as I just didn't find the 9/1 metaphor Xindi arc very interesting, or at the very least, not what I was looking for on a Trek series. But I soon came back for the more TOS-prequel-y S4, as that was more what I wanted from the show. So it was more a five-minute retirement than anything.

More recently, I decided to quit watching DSC at the end of S2. I found that both seasons 1 and 2 started out pretty strongly and had really disappointing endings, so the leap to the future of the 32nd Century seemed like a good jumping off point. Maybe I'll eventually come back to it.

And honestly, this 3rd season of SNW has been trying my patience. I just watched "Terrarium," the 9th episode of the season as I write this, and it's been lots of disappointing episodes with no really great ones (IMO). I'll probably stick it out until the very end of the series, though, since there's only 17 episodes left now.

What about you folks? Have you had a last straw with any Star Trek series that got you to stop watching?

(To clarify: I'm not looking for an encyclopedic litany of everything you've ever hated about any ST series here. That will become very dull to read very quickly. More some little thing that made you say, "...Yeah, I think I'm done here." I think that is much more interesting. And if you're discussing recent episodes of SNW, please remember to use SPOILER code! :))
I have

I gave up on: Discovery after season 4, Strange New Worlds after season 1, Lower Decks after season 4 and prodigy after season 1. I liked all these shows to varying extents but what made me stop watching was Picard Season 3. Something about the fanservice really rubbed me the wrong way. I guess in my mind all the new shows are kind of lumped together in my mind so I haven't watched a single new episode since. Maybe someday I'll catch up with them.

I've yet to see Lower Decks Season 5, Strange New Worlds Season 3 or the Section 31 movie.

Just haven't signed up to to Paramount+ in the last year or so and nothing I've heard about the shows has really grabbed me.

I have Paramount+, but not because of New Trek. I have it to watch Old Trek along with YouTube Reactors. Paramount+ also has the '90s Aeon Flux cartoon, the '60s/'70s Mission: Impossible series, and it has The Brady Bunch. I don't care what any of you say, I love The Brady Bunch. MTV's The State is on Paramount+ too. If you know, you know.

So, my subscription is no longer dependent on what Star Trek currently puts out. Though I'll probably re-watch Discovery Seasons 3-5 during the two weeks before SFA premieres, to reacquaint myself with the 32nd Century.

I've not yet been introduced to the 32nd Century. Is it nice? ;)

It's really no different than the 23rd century.

Yeah. Just flashier.

As a general setting, it has untapped potential.

Oh most definitely.

What happened to the various classic Trek civilizations? With the contraction of the Federation to a smaller than 23rd century size, what filled the power vacuum? What planets collapsed? What new geopolitical organizations have developed?

It was like the individual Trek pieces were shuffled and put in entirely new combinations.

Find out next time on "As the Galaxy Turns!"

I gave up on Discovery around after a few episodes into season 5. Can't remember why. Hopefully at some stage I'll get around to watching the series to see how it ends.

Yet to watch that sector 31 movie as I heard it was bad.

I suppose I would have to say "Several". I'm not sure how you count TOS since I saw it all in re-runs. But I lost track of TNG in it's last couple of seasons due to accessibility to a TV with reception. I never really got into DS9 for the same reason. VOY never really grabbed me that hard. I watched the first season and then dropped away. ENT never got me. I watched the premier.

Present day: DSC drove me off with it's season 2 closer. (But I watched two seasons as they aired. Best I've done since TNG!) I've seen all of LDS, all of SNW, all of PRO. I've actually re-watched the first two seasons of SNW a few time now.

Good heavens. Am I even a Trekkie?!?

Well, I still watch TOS. I finished up TNG and watched all of DS9. I watched the third season of DSC and some of four. I'll get back to it someday.

I've never gotten back to VOY or ENT (although I've seen the finales to both). Again, maybe someday.

Oh, and I've seen all of TAS multiple times.

I lost interest in Voyager around season 6 because I thought it was getting boring and repetitive. I lost interest in Enterprise during season 2 also because it was getting boring. However, I have since seen everything that I missed.

I couldn't get past the first few episodes of DSC or SNW. They were okay TV shows (I actually enjoyed SNW), but they're not the Trek I know and love. It feels like the sequel trilogy for Star Trek.
