Hatin on TFF

Well, I'm just more into defending the movie against statements of "it's nothing like the original series", because it is like the original series.

I don't understand this argument at all on either side. Just because it's like the worst episodes of TOS doesn't mean it's like TOS.

By this same logic I could argue Insurrection is the best/worst TNG movie because it's most like the worst episodes of the show: bad love interests, dull pacing, sanctimonious preaching, poorly thought out morality plays. Because that's all that TNG was, right?

well to be fair, not all those who defend TFF as being in the spirit of TOS mean it as a dig at TOS' occasional bouts of campiness, cheesy humor and special effects, etc.

They might also mean it's like TOS because of it's exploration of the Big Three, it's plot bringing up the Big Questions, etc.

Yet I mostly agree with your point. If TFF was a TOS episode, it'd most likely be a weak, season three episode.(Hey, it already kind of was with "way to eden.")

Plus even if you hate the movie from beginning to end, one simply can't deny it has one of the best lines in trek, perhaps even movie history...

"what does god need with a starship?"
"Jim! You don't ask the almighty for his ID..."

I think they added more humor because it worked so well in TVH but in TFF it fell flat at times because of timing it came off as more campy at times than humorous. The sad thing it that made the crew look even older and in the end signaled the end of the TOS movies.

The problem with the humor in ST5 was that it wasn't natural. In TVH, the humor mostly came out from the situations. In ST5, it was mostly one-liners thrown in.

Yeah, it's actually called organic. Nothing, especially the humor in TFF is organic. Shatner's love of puns and quips is not the nature of Trek, or of adult humor at all.

Yes. I've said it before, removing the bad humor from TFF would do more to improve the movie than re-working the visual effects.

I love TFF becuse it got some of the best charactor interactions since the Tv show and everybody seems to be having one hell of a good time in the movie.....switch off and enjoy it for what it is....and enjoyble no brainer fun trek moive.

I could not disagree more. About half the dialogue in TUC was so much better, to say nothing of TVH.

Hell, for as much flack as Abrams' Trek takes on this site and/or this very thread I find it to be vastly superior to TFF in every respect.

As a film? Sure, it's bad, but star trek movies aren't exactly high art. Most of them are pretty mediocre as films.

As a fun star trek movie? I like it. Star Trek is supposed to be fun. I enjoy watching it very much from time to time.

TFF does not respect the characters outside of the big three.

That's an odd thing to say considering TFF has more of an ensemble feel than any of the other movies besides TVH. Everyone has something to do that's integral to the plot. It's especially odd since Shatner - king of stealing screen time - was directing.

Especially odd considering who really cares about anyone besides the big three? TOS is not an ensemble show.

The complaint is not that TFF neglects the other characters. Note that TMP and TWOK give very little material to the Peripheral Four, and IINM Takei and Nichols were especially dissatisfied with their small roles in those first two films, but it is not commonly cited as a failing of the films.

The complaint is that TFF insults the characters for cheap laughs. Scotty’s pratfall hitting his head on a cross beam, Sulu and Chekov’s moronic “fake blizzard,” Uhura’s uncomfortable flirtation with Scotty—and did the hair and makeup people have a fight with Nichols? These moments are really uncomfortable, almost embarrassing to watch.

We can live with minor characters being moved into the background, I guess, but when characters the fans have loved for two decades do appear on screen, we want consistency with existing characterizations, and we want likability. Compared to the other five TOS films, TFF doesn’t do very well in that regard.

I didn't like that the humor in the film was often at the expense of the characters. The navigator and helmsman who can take you anywhere in the galaxy can't find their way out of the woods, har har. The engineer knows the ship so well he can't walk from A to B without knocking himself out, chortle.

When I saw it in the theater the year it came out everyone was laughing and having a good time and I really enjoy the movie. But now, even though I do still like this movie...the humor really doesn't work. If they cut some of the humor out and work on the special effects it would be a much better movie.

I saw it a couple of times in the theatre and thought the opening sequence was pretty good with some nice interaction between the Triumverate, but the rest of the story is just a confused mess. I wouldn't say it's horrible, but it's definitely not a film I enjoyed enough to watch again or own.

I find these funny.
