The show looks like it's gonna fail after two seasons bad reviews from critics and a tepid response from the fans.

There are other sci fi shows out there that Discovery will have to compete with, if it doesn't get 10/10/10 it will fail.
Based upon what, exactly?

CBS is under no obligation reveal everything, especially since they are using it to promote their streaming service.

Some the fans felt burned by Enterprise, combined with the recent prequel/remake Hollywood burnout that is starting to happen among western viewers, and of course the more conservative end of the fanbase. That's likely the source of the conflict.

Personally, I am all for the show, hell part of my thesis will be examining the series when it eventually airs, so i am diffinatley looking forward to it as an academic, and as a fan i am curious to see this part of the ST-verse and how its portrayed, particularly with a more present upgrade and venturing a bit more outside the slightly outdated "Family Entertainment" grip CBS has had on it over the years.

Considering that critics -- or anyone -- has yet to see an episode (because an episode has yet to be made), I think it's premature to claim "bad reviews from critics".

As for a tepid response from the fans, that sounds line something I heard in 1986 and 1987 about another new Star Trek series that was about to premiere.

Might DSC end up being awful? Sure -- but there is no reason right now for me to believe that it will be awful.

The show will receive no grace period or patience as TNG or DS9/Voy/ENT did.

It needs to wow the fans in the first 2.56 seconds or it will immediately fall upon itself.

I would have posted more but I kept getting carried to an advertisement site-so my post made less sense than I wanted it too

Why do people keep implying that Star Trek can't do this, even with good writers?

Because Trek fans have extremely high expectations and are unforgiving of failure.

Wasn't there a fan at some conference with Disc's writers who said "You better not screw this up" I can't imagine what sort of pressure that puts on writers.

I was at a DSC panel at the Star Trek convention in NYC last September and a fan asked Nicholas Meyer and Kirsten Bayer a question kind of like this. And Meyer said fans need to "stay loose" and come to it with "an open mind and an open heart." And that's true. But that hardly means DSC is doomed to fail, because in my experience, the "you better not screw it up, a$$hole!" fans are basically a minority in the larger Trek fandom.

The first few seasons of TNG, a major proportion of 7 years of Voyager/4 years of Enterprise, and a good chunk of the movie franchise would seem to refute that assertion. If anything Trek fans are too accepting, eager to watch and buy anything that the Trek logo is slapped on regardless of quality.

It's the non trek fans that determine the success.

It's got at least one season's grace period built in because of the Netflix deal (which has essentially covered the entire production cost as I understand it) so there's time. ENT was really rushed (what, 4-6m from announcement to air if I remember right) but they seem to have learned their lesson and are going to try to get it "right" out of the gate (or course this means we have to wait longer).

I don't already hate Discovery. I don't think it will necessarily fail.

What I believe is that they'd be best off to not pander to us fans. Don't give us cute cameos, winks and nods. If this thing succeeds, it needs to have mass appeal like TNG. Many fans loved season 4 of Enterprise, but they were the only ones watching! I totally agree that the show needs to hit the ground running. A shoddy opening season will see the series loose too many viewers. Then you'll end up with an expensive series that just cant get enough support, shows like:
V, Terra Nova, Almost Human etc... All good shows, just not enough support.

From Trek Movie:
“this iteration of Star Trek is going to have a different take than the others in the Star Trek canon. It’s going to be bigger, rawer and grittier… and the story’s going to build on itself. It’s going to be a tremendous journey.”

Reading between the lines, I think there will be some sort of time travel reset. I love TOS, but it's hardly raw and gritty ;)
Maybe they'll be tasked with resetting the timeline, restoring the timeline, or ensuring that this timeline proceeds as it should?
