Hate Enterprise, then come to love it?

Did anyone else just hate Enterprise at first, then by the end come to love it? That's what happened to me. At first I didn't even feel it was Star Trek, particularly with that awful theme song. There seemed too many Americans in there, not enough Brits (just the one). The sets didn't look Trek (too realistic!). And the whole idea of there being an Enterprise before Kirk's seemed blasphemous. Yet by the end I realised this sure was Trek, came to love the characters and the series in it's own right. Trip, at first I thought he was a redneck, turned out to be a great guy and one of my favourite characters. Archer was good, but realistically flawed captain.

"Hate" was too strong a word, but "disappointment" probably rang much truer for me while ENT was on the air. It really wasn't until after the show went off the air, however, that I looked at it more objectively and saw that majority of the things I was disappointed with had more to do with my own preconceptions of how the show should have been...

That still doesn't make me a fan of ENT, it's still my least favorite Trek series--but I'm a lot more tolerant of it than I used to be. These days, I see more things they "got right" than things they "got wrong."

I loved it from day one. Even the theme song. Many Trek fans complained about it being too different from Star Trek they knew and love, but THAT was actually what I loved most about Enterprise. After 21 seasons spent in the 24th century, I felt that a radical change was in order.

With this in mind, I'd even say it wasn't different enough. At times one could really feel that the people behind it were the same people who were behind Voyager. Nevertheless, the show was very good, and I still miss it a lot.

I can't say I hated it, though I was sorely disappointed with season one and most of season two. The season two finale made me take notice and I enjoyed most of the Xindi-arc from season 3. I pretty much enjoyed all season 4. So it was never love or hate for me, but it did go from dislike to relatively like.

For me it was never like or dislike, just dissapointment over what I thought were missed opportunities.

I never watched it when it was on the air. I had heard, however, NOTHING but bad things about it. So, when I finally broke down and brought the series on DVD in order to complete my Trek collection, I didn't go into it with high hopes.

ENT blew me away right from the beginning. Sure, there were mis-steps, but what Trek series doesn't have those? *cough-TNG Seasons One and Two-cough*

Hated. Loathed. Detested. Abhorred.

They were all the same to me. I hated ENT back in 2001. It was horrible.

However, much to the urging of teacake I started to watch it again just recently and it's no where near as bad as I remember. I've come to the conclusion that I just hated ENT because I loved Voyager and it wasn't them. Now I'm okay with it.

I know!! I was bored by it at first and it was because it was the same old, same old Trek. People saying it was "not Trek" I just couldn't fathom. It actually feels like a 90's show to me in the first couple seasons and I think it missed the boat as far as being cutting edge or new--but you know that was never the intention.

Now when I watch it I often think, "this is a classic Trek ep" or in some of seasons 3 and 4, "this is absolutely the best of Trek." Not because it's new, but because the great eps of ENT are in keeping with the great eps of the other series and they are doing what Trek does best.

Yes it does look shinier. I actually love the ship, love love love it. It's so grey and industrial, built to be serviceable in the era before replicators and holodecks. It is much more like a Navy vessel of today than like the TOS Enterprise which manages to look more comfy despite the vintage sets. It's very believable.

My initial boredom had a lot to do with viewing it very late at night with gazillions of commercials. Once I was able to watch it in my own time commercial free I was completely sucked in and after being a Trek fan for 30 so years completely THRILLED to have new Trek.

It upsets me when people dismiss it based on a few duller eps in the first season. They are really missing out on a wonderful series, great characters and fantastic tie ins to the rest of series. It gets better and better too.

I'll second that motion, with the addition that it's all easier to stomach after seeing how it all played out.

Me! Oh me! Me!!

Okay, hate is perhaps too strong a word. After the first few episodes, I was indifferent about the show. (Okay, hated the decon scene with Trip and T'Pol... strange how I ended up shipping the pair later.)

I stopped watching altogether about half-way through the first season. Later, a friend whose taste I consider good, told me that ENT was getting better, so I decided to watch the next episode when it aired. It happened to be "Countdown" and I was hooked.

During the summer hiatus between seasons 3 & 4, I watched the first three seasons and realized that though I still was a bit underwhelmed by seasons 1 and 2 (still hated the decon scene -- and even to this day not a fan of it), season 3 was fantastic. And I had the appropriate fan-squeeing fit during the fourth season -- contributed to the "Save Enterprise" fund and hung my head in chagrin when it was cancelled anyway.

And now that I've been catching up on DS9 (the one series I haven't watched all the way through), I realize that I love ENT even more. I definitely prefer it over 24th century Trek -- I love the "fly by the seat of our pants" - ness of it. And I love the characters.

I liked Enterrpise from the very beginning when i first saw Broken bow for the first time it aired on tv. I liked the characters and it still is one of my favorite star trek series.

I watched most of the first season when it debuted back in '01-'02, and aside from a couple episodes, I was pretty underwhelmed. Then I went to college in the fall of '02 and ENT was completely off my radar for the next couple of years. I didn't really get back into it until I caught a rerun of "The Forge" back in late '04, and I couldn't believe it was the same show. I was hooked, and I happily followed the rest of Season 4. I ended up registering here just a couple weeks after ENT was canceled back in February 2004, though I didn't participate much in the discussions/debates/wars back then. I was mostly a lurker for my first year or so here.

I feel this thread was made for me:)

Having grown up on VOY, then TOS (didn't like TNG or DS9), all the publicity on ENT made me go 'meh'. Female Vulcan? Pre-TOS? Crap theme tune?

It's been a long road, getting from there to here (10 years to be precise) but finally got round to watching from beginning to end. And you know what? Loved it. What I think this series does better than any other series is (re)capture spirit of TOS. Yeah, you heard right. ENT is as good (fun?) as original Star Trek. Narratively makes sense as obviously trying to establish continuity with TOS and sets up many elements (Prime Directive, birth of Fed, Andorians, Tholians, etc). But more so, think it captures the 'essence' of TOS well. That slightly wild, let's-see-what-happens mentality rather than cerebral power-plays of DS9 and VOY. Has a lot more humour than I expected (with some real laugh-out-loud moments haven't had in other Trek series) and really nice TOS-style interplay between characters. From 'couldn't-care-less', it's now become one of my fave Trek series (heresy, I know). Season 1 has great stories that have a lot in common with the 'first contact' eps of TOS. Season 2 starts well, but dips a bit in middle. The episode with the arrogant princess (already done in TOS and TNG) must rank as one of worst ever (def for acting ). And though this goes counter to fan thinking, I actually found the Season 3 Xindi arc a bit dull and tedious. For me, best seasons are definitely 1, start of 2 and 4. Fave episodes are the two-parter In A Mirror Darkly (arguably the best Trek ever, better than VOY and DS9 which I'm a huge fan of) and Carbon Creek (the best ever Trek 'shaggy dog' story).

I did hate the show and after a while I stopped hating it and ignored it.
Just wasn't worth the time.

Excitment led to disappointment led to curiosity led to appreciation!

I was sorry when it ended. Really sorry with the ending!!!

It was not on anywhere in the state where I live. Caught the first episode while on vacation in Florida. Thought they were trying to produce "Star Trek 90210" targeted towards young, non-Trekkies that are more interested in skin than story. (As opposed to TOS which was skin + story.)

Years later saw a few episodes on SciFi and grew to like it. Bought the DVD set so I could watch it from beginning to end at my own pace and it became my favorite. It still has some of the worst episodes in Trek, but it also has some of the best. Plus, I love how they handled the Vulcans and Klingons were once again Klingons.
