Has the Red Angel moved the show out of the Prime Universe?

.
TNGers did have DS9 and Voyager and even ENT to continue without needing to go through the stages needed for acceptance of anything actually NEW and DIVERGENT.
I have always had difficulty reconciling that TNG and DS9 are supposed to happen in the same setting.

3 different Star Trek shows airing in 2 years from today. I dont think so. I'd say we would be lucky if there are 2 new ones.
I think $ is going to come in to play now that Netflix is no longer willing to pay the bill. Also lots of noise out there about CBS and budgets. Picard and Disco maybe, S31 IDK.
Ive marked my calander, we shall see.
Netflix already confirmed they're carrying The Picard Show internationally.

You really need to stop watching Midnight's Edge. Really.

His relationship with Gene was strained while alive, so I'm not sure even he knows what he would have found acceptable.
Um, what GR found 'acceptable' varied literally from day to day just LOOKING at what was in the episodes hen was involved in producing from TOS, through the films, and on into TNG.

This whole "Gene's Vision" thing was just a publicity/marketing tool GR himself employed to keep Star Trek in the public eye and pander to the fanbase that somehow believed GR always had some 'grand plan' (He didn't of course, he like most just wanted the paycheck because in the end it's how he made a living).

You are free to interpret things personally any way you like, but the IP owner has full control of and dictates how they see the stories and such - and if the IP owners say "It's part of the original Star Trek 'Prime' universe..." it is. If you don't accept that, that's up to you, but for the majority of Star trek fandom (casual or hardcore), it's 'Prime' because CBS says it is.

If yourself, or someone with a similar view ever were to gain control of the Star Trek IP, you could then retcon things anyway you like and that would then be the official stance; but until then CBS' stance is:

"ST: D takes place in the original/Prime Star Trek Universe..."

If Netflix "wasn't willing to pay the bill..." they wouldn't be carrying either ST: D or the new Picard series (which they have announced they will be). They are paying whatever fees and production costs specified in the agreements they made with CBS to carry these series.

How much are they paying?

Only CBS and Netflix know, and they are not releasing the info publicly.

I don't know. I see the problem isn't a quality issue. The Berman/Baraga era was consistent in quality for on average for 17 years.

My problem is the a sameness of what was offered, from Encounter at Farpoint to These are the Voyages, it was the same show with minor variations from time to time, hardly evolving at all.

I will accept a wide divergence in "quality" if there enough variety to make it interesting. I've enjoyed some really objectively bad shows because of the freshness they offered, at least for a while, but they need to evolve to keep me interested.

Sameness, on and on. Nope. Thats the killer, no matter the level of overall quality that sameness is presented at, IMHO.

Exactly. I was really worried that it would have that "trudging through the same old" feel that lost me on Voyager pretty quickly back in the day. I was pleasantly surprised that they went in another direction. It's not perfect, but at least it doesn't have that feel to it.

I actually find it quite fascinating (well, and on another level, irritating) how Gene Roddenberry's image management, self-promotion, and his personal beefs with "the suits" has managed to endure beyond the grave. It really does feel like a religion sometimes, with all the squabbles over the alleged coherence of the foundational text, and the foibles of its founding prophet. Academics really could sink their teeth into this stuff.

I have to disagree, I think there was a definite difference in quality between the shows.

DS9 was VERY different to TNG or Voyager

TNG had tremendous distribution, DS9 was more of a sleeper side project which wasn't given near the same marketing. Voyager was a flagship show on network TV but seen as "tng lite" and Enterprise suffered from a poor first two seasons which doomed it by the time it got good.

TNG - Great and great visability

DS9 - Great and different but poor visibility

VOY - Middling to good TNG lite and great visibility

ENT - Average first 2 seasons and TNG lite, great and different last 2 seasons, average visability

Insurrection and Nemesis being very dissapointing movies, added to the watering down of quality and visability of on air shows was what did Star trek in, and tbh I'm not convinced about CBS all access as a distribution medium for Star trek. Right now they see it as an investment but it remains to be seen if it'll be able to carry the all-access platform
They promoted the HELL out of DS9 when it premiered - and it had one full season of being the only Star Trek series on the air. por Visibility/Distribution wasn't DS9's issue at all. It lost many Star Trek fans because at the time they thought is was too different and too dark (again, at the time it was the first Trek series not to have GR involved in it's creation and cries of "Not GR's 'vision' were strong.) It pretty stayed on the same stations that aired TNG and those stations still liked the advertisers that a first run show brought to the table.

In fact all 3 post TNG Berman and Braga Star Trek shows had about the same percentage decline rate (in ratings) over their respective runs - it was just that each subsequent show had less viewers tune into the series premiere episode than the previous incarnation.

ENT had it way harder than either DS9 or VOY because at the time it premiered UPN was losing affiliates - and many that remained were low power UHF stations. UPN and many local affiliate stations also had a habit of pre-empting and moving ENT episode broadcasts for local Team sports broadcasts.

Bottom line: The claim that DS9 somehow had poor/less visibility isn't really accurate. It was that TNG fans didn't warm to it past the start, and didn't start to re-warm to it until after it was near the end (The whole reason Worf was transplanted in Season 4 was to try and 'win back' TNG fans, but it didn't do much.)

Yes, DS9 is liked and accepted as part of the fold now - but during it's run, it was the 'too grimdark...GR is spinning in his grave....' Star Trek series.

And all of this is why I don't put much stock into people saying Discovery is "Too dark!" or "It's not Star Trek!" I've seen all this before. It's more like going through the motions, waiting for people to come around. Some people still won't like DSC, the same as some still don't like DS9, but the bite from the vitriol will be gone. It's already starting to disappear somewhat. "Season 2 is better than Season 1!"

I feel like there's some entrenchment in camps at this point. People who didn't like the show from the start are probably going to have a hard time coming aboard, and there are those of us who are now invested in the characters and the story, so some of the criticisms just bounce off at this point.

As a fan watching since 1969 at age 6 - I can state there's ALWAYS been 'entrenchment' when new Star trek hits, going all the way back to TAS in 1973 when it was a lot of the same actors and writers from the original series - just animated - and cut to 30 minutes (about 22 - 24 minutes runtime for an episode). The only thing is that with the current state of Internet social media it's much easier for those 'entrenched' fans to espouse their views to a wide audience and with Youtube and Twitch monetization for views, there's a monetary component added for them to keep it up (even if they personally might decide they start to like the show.)

In general, drama or negativity around something popular and trending is usually a very successful tactic on youtube. Without question, a good number of them are just keeping up appearances to play the game.

Nor should they.

I wonder what they'll do when Discovery gets up to a seventh season.

They will have moved on to "The Picard in The Picard Show is not really Picard and CBS is just trying to trick you into liking something" videos.
No doubt. Someone already managed to pump out a 15-minute drama complete with fake crying called PICARD DESTROYED based entirely on one sentence uttered by Kurtzman about the new series. This video is already the second most viewed on their channel with about 60,000 views while most others average below 5k, including one posted around the same time asking "will Discovery destroy Kirk?" So yeah, something tells me they're going to get a LOT more mileage out of Picard.
