harsh realities of rewatching original Star Trek show

The Expanse was pretty fantastic. The books were better I think overall, but the show was amazing. Hopefully they get back to going over the last three books but that might be problematic given the time jump.

It’s very common for people to find themselves suddenly or quickly smitten with someone else.
I can relate to characters that seem to fall for a pretty face. Possibly happen twice in my own life...one worked out temporarily, but in the end, it was just lust and not love. :(

Yep. And who is to say McGivers didn’t regret her decision after some time marooned with Khan and his group?

Marla: “We’re fucked, Khan! The planet is a wasteland! What is your superior intellect gonna do for us now?”
Khan: “Marla, have you seen these curious little creatures..?”

I thought TOS was a really good series, aside from a few things. One, I thought Season 3 sucked, aside from a few episodes. And I really disliked the series' habit of creating alien societies that bore a very strong resemblance to human societies of the past. I thought this revealed a lack of originality.

Using alien societies to comment on aspects of humanity is a long established practice in science fiction. And one of the main points of selling the series to the network was the cost saving measure of using existing sets and costumes.

The foundation of Star Trek in TOS was action/adventure with social commentary. It's not lack of originality; it's baked in to the premise.

It was even part of Roddenberry's pitch, IIRC. A way of delivering commentary while appealing to the Networks worried about dong sci-fi on a budget.

Here is some harsh reality of a different sort.

There are a couple of guys, admitted Star Wars fans, who call themselves The Target Audience on Youtube. They took it upon themselves to watch all of Star Trek beginning, of course, with TOS.

They claimed to know next to nothing about Star Trek beyond some recollections of ST09. They admitted/claimed going into their reaction watch of TOS expecting it to be similar to ST09 and more like the camp of the 1960’s Adam West Batman series.

They did not expect what they got: a straight up action/adventure series that took itself seriously and explored interesting ideas. Throughout the entire run, including third season, they rarely seemed to be disappointed with the show, even liking the third season generally more than a lot of long time fans seem to. They really liked the concept, setting and all the characters.

Bottom line is they liked the show a lot more than they expected to and even thought much of it still holds up well today.
