Harry Kim promotion theory

Then she is a poor manager, and Chakotay is poor for not calling out. Promotion criteria should not be a mystery and personal growth is part of humanity's drive forward so stymieing him for any reason makes no sense.

Oh Chakotay hated all of the rest of the crew. That's why he let Janeway's madness go unchecked.

Headcanon: Chakotay was actually just a Harry Mudd con man all along.

The fact that nobody knows what happens to Kim just increases my fondness for the idea that he joins S31.

Besides, Kim was never as interesting as he was in "Timeless", all bitter and obsessive. ;)

You have doubts about that, just watch the exchange between Janeway and Harry in "Nightingale". In about a minute of dialogue, when Harry reminds her that he's been an ensign for a ludicrous amount of time, she promptly accuses him of "bucking for a promotion". Of course he backs down, but says that if they were in the Alpha Quadrant, he would be at least a lieutenant. And then she derides him for being too "sure of himself". Like he should expect to be anything more than an ensign, ever.

The bulk of the episode might be spent assassinating Harry, but it takes some time to make Janeway an insensitive b:censored: as well.

Which is the dumbest thing to me. That's...not how a formal organization like Starfleet works. Even if the pay isn't better, the idea is to grow in to more responsibility, not stay the same. Especially not the first tier. Ensigns are for gaining experience under the tutelage of experienced officers and move towards greater responsibility. That's called growth.

You've probably already replayed the following possibility in your head innumerable times, so, I'll apologize in advance for what - in all likelihood - is a stroll through familiar territory.

---

In another reality, Harry Kim is Captain of the U.S.S. Voyager and Kathryn Janeway is the forever-denied Ensign.

And in another, Janeway and Paris's trip ended way back in some backwater swamp planet on the outer edge of the Beta Quadrant, where they were undisturbed and ultimately sired a massive race of salamanders.

To fix the gaping holes in the command structure, Captain Chakotay promoted Harry to lieutenant next day.

The surest way i ever saw for that Cuddly little man to do better for himself was the moment he saw another Starfleet Ship, Equinox, Dauntless, whatever, was to demand an instant transfer and promotion...

Maybe Captain Ransom would have appreciated little Kim?

Of course, original Harry Kim is dead.

This is technically a transporter clone. Sort of like how O'Brian is actually from a parallel reality.

And in another Harry remained on Earth, heard about Voyager's disappearance, finds Paris, and develops an engine to go find it.

I think Captain Riker would. He certainly wouldn't care about Kim's reprimand, given that boffing female aliens was kind of his thing.

His first Prime Directive Violation was not letting an old dude commit suicide and them proving to a whole planet that their religion was bunk, but he was wrong, and their religion was not bunk but it was too late to apologize or stop a billion aliens from turning their backs on a very real afterlife with their ancestors, descendants and loved ones.

Too conceited to function.

Riker would promote Kim solely on that basis. :p

Riker sums up: "So let me get this straight, you met an alien who claimed to be your sister, so you tried to bang her, but it was a trick, because you were not related, but she thought of you as food, and was going to eat you, but its alright because it still felt good like sex, as she ate you, so it was worth it, even though "it" was cannibalism and incest?"

Harry Kim: In my defense, I hadn't been laid in a long time and the holodeck was filled with a bunch of Irish stereotypes.
