HAHA! I WAS RIGHT!

Dayton3 has not actually seen the movie. He's admitted this in various threads.

I've never been in prison either but I'm reasonably sure I would not like it.

Knowledge trumps experience everytime.

Um, no.......

I'm reasonably certain that if I were to poll a bunch of employers, and ask them where they wanted people with "hands-on" experience or book knowledge, the vast majority would say experience!

I think you saw what you wanted to see.

Not all of the characters are as young as some people seem to think they are.

Kirk: He was not as young as the other cadets due to not going straight to Starfleet.

Spock: Spock had already been with Starfleet for years, was a commander, and Pike's First Officer.

McCoy: He was already an experienced doctor and was one of the nuE's "senior medical officers." He was promoted to chief when the other was killed on deck 6.

Uhura: She is a cadet, but is extremely gifted so she takes over for the relieved guy in the crisis.

Sulu: He gets his spot because someone called in sick.

Chekov: He's a boy genius, the youngest of the bunch.

Scotty: He's not a cadet anymore. He is an experienced engineer sent to Delta Vega as punishment for disagreeing with one of his professors.

I just don't think this group is as wet-behind-the-ears as the haters would like to make it seem. I thought the film did a great job getting everyone to their recognizable positions.

JJ didn't just take "liberties" with ST Cannon, he OBLITERATED the cannon!!

To the best of my knowledge, Spock was the only one aboard the Enterprise when Pike was Captain!

What canon?
There is no previously established canon in this universe or timeline.

J.

So if I Google "Capt. Christopher Pike - USS Enterprise" I won't find anything?

:guffaw:

Certainly, but it will be information that recounts historical events taking place in another universe, what may be considered the Prime universe. This universe we are in (Trek XI) is not the Prime universe, and that is stated quite plainly.

I know that.

They're wrong too of course.

Well, I saw the movie, and I was right!

It really was "Doogie Howser MD in Space" or, as someone else more aply put it, "90210 in Space".

As someone who really served in the Naval Sea Cadet Corps, let me assure you that none of us would've ever been allowed to steer an aircraft carrier, let alone command it!

:techman:

These people were *WAY* too young. If memory serves me, Kirk didn't get Captain until he was 35. This Kirk got it at 20!

Pavel Checkov was 17!!

Now how many of you are willing to admit I was right when I said they would be straight out of the academy & way too young?

.....I eagery await your replies!

No, you were wrong. That is all. :p

What canon?

J.

Uh. No. This is an alternate reality where future events (from when Nero came back) into the future are different than we've seen before. Anything prior to Nero's appearance remains unchanged. The event of First Contact remains (the movie is a different story), and the entirety of the Enterprise series remains canon. And all of the history talked about in the series that occurred before Nero's appearance. The Eugenics wars, etc.

Okay. You were right.

Doesn't matter, because the truly moronic among us are lining up to drink JJ's bathwater again. One review I read gave it five stars. Out of five.

Apparently, people want 90210 In Space.

Then it's not Trek, it's just another action movie.

I think its a little erroneous to compare the employment practices of that time with the i'm sure you'll agree less than perfect ones of our times.

In our time there are many conflicts of intrest between the right person for the job and external factors like class, politics, nepotism, corporate profits, traditions etc.

In the star trek time, it is a meritocracy. The people who promote are there because of merit, and they are likely to be intuitively right about who to promote. The best person for the job gets into postion automatically by this system.

This is because people have the freedom to be individuals and to enjoy their individuality and the rich and increasingly niched society they live in allow them to excel at being themselves and society also profits by that diversity. This also means there will be no resentment of fast promotions and instituions will develop which foster the meritocracy recursively.

Also to flatly declare you are right and everyone else is wrong by making statements like 'see it was Doogie howser afterall' is not progressive: it just shows you were too prejudiced and closed-minded to appreciate most of what the film was offering before you went in.

In effect you are trying to promulgate a dogma in which you declare yourself the exclusive spokesman. You seem to be imploring everyone to accept you as Gene Roddenberry reincarnated.

and the entirety of the Enterprise series remains canon.
Why does the Klingon land on earth in the first episode of Enterprise?

Way ahead of you. I like where this is going ;)

It's not going in my direction. I was displeased with ENTERPRISE too, until Manny fixed it.......Unfortunately, it was then ruined again by B&B.

:(

And speaking of Manny, why couldn't *HE* have been given command of this, rather than someone (JJ) who's on record having never liked Trek?

Anyone??

This is why people make fun of us normal fans.

You are what Leonard Nimoy called a "dickhead" on SNL.

OMIGAWD!! I had to register just to post this!

Cadet corps =/= Academy cadets!!!!!!!!

I am a Civil Air Patrol (USAF Auxiliary) cadet, I am NOT an Air Force Academy Cadet. They, in fact can be called to combat situations.

This.

Abrams made them all brilliant young officers worthy of the flagship. Improbable, but not a complete stretch.

I love how the OP thinks he's taunting us by taking shots at a movie that's killed at the box office and created a whole new generations of Trek fans. I've even talked to people who WANTED the movie to fail-- if anything, we're the ones with gloating rights, not you :).

On the contrary, I'm right on target.

Action movies are a dime a dozen these days. I like action movies, and I like action in Star Trek.

(Case in point, The Wrath of Kahn)

But this was not Trek, it was just a bunch of 20 something blowing things up in space. I didn't have to do any contemplating about this movie's deeper meaning whatsoever........Because there was none.

:shifty:

Well, I saw the movie, and I was right!
You thought it was great? Good for you!

It really was "Doogie Howser MD in Space" or, as someone else more aply put it, "90210 in Space".

Soooo... a prequel with younger people equals 90210? Were Star Wars prequels Corruscant 90210? Was the Casino Royale, Bond 90210?

As someone who really served in the Naval Sea Cadet Corps, let me assure you that none of us would've ever been allowed to steer an aircraft carrier, let alone command it!

I bow to your superior knowledge...

These people were *WAY* too young. If memory serves me, Kirk didn't get Captain until he was 35. This Kirk got it at 20!
No. Wrong on both counts.

Now how many of you are willing to admit I was right when I said they would be straight out of the academy & way too young?
And... who are you again?

Sorry bub.....

Space is under *NAVAL* jurisdiction.
