HAHA! I WAS RIGHT!

As far as selling well, who to?

As has already been pointed out, this is just another action flick, not Star Trek. So if a bunch of non-ST people go see it, does that signify anything meritous?

......Not from where I sit. Most of the "old hands" like myself are disappointed.

:borg:

I'm sorry to hear it, but Star Trek is not your personal clubhouse.

And let me also report that all the old hands I know loved it.

Your right, it's not my personal playground, but by the same token, allowing every little whim to be part of ST makes ST to no effect.

Simply by its mere existance, this movie destroys Trek, and on several levels. The fact that you can't see that is not my problem.

How does one join "the old hand" club? Do i need to time travel back to the 60's? Or is it just an age thing?

I have seen TOS in syndication and all the movies and was curious as what club I automatically belong to.

Yeah, maybe in this alternate universe they started their careers a bit young. But at least it's in keeping with standard practice that every time Kirk saves the Earth, he get's a wish.

Wrong it is your problem: you make the statement and as usual can't provide a coherent argument to back it up. Saying 'you can't see what i can' is no argument, it means more like that you are deluding yourself.

If I take a glass of water, and I pour soda into the glass, what happens to the water?

I assume that 'old hands' are people who saw TOS before TNG or any other Trek series.

Yeah, that makes sense. Star Trek was doing so very, very well before now. The last movie was critically acclaimed and a box office smash hit. The last spin-off was well loved by fans and casual viewers alike, and maintained that standard of quality for all of the many, many years it was on the air.

What your crowd doesn't seem to be getting is that the Star Trek you were familiar with was never coming back no matter what.

more than a little inaccurate as it appears that the ones who are irrationally disgruntled like yourself is an extreme, but obnoxiously loud minority. MOST of the "old hands" as you put it, seem to have quite enjoyed it, myself included.

Of course starting out with a 90210 argument indicates a lack of "intuitive" ability anyway. 90210 was a show about teenage high school students, years away from college. Star Trek was about people ranging in age from 25ish to early 30's, making them on average a decade older than the characters being portrayed in 90210.

In the real military, fighter pilots for example, start pretty damn young. As young or younger than the Trek cadets. Sorry.

Final analysis: Your logic is FAIL.

Well, I saw the movie, and I was right!

It really was "Doogie Howser MD in Space" or, as someone else more aply put it, "90210 in Space".

As someone who really served in the Naval Sea Cadet Corps, let me assure you that none of us would've ever been allowed to steer an aircraft carrier, let alone command it!

:techman:

These people were *WAY* too young. If memory serves me, Kirk didn't get Captain until he was 35. This Kirk got it at 20!

Pavel Checkov was 17!!

Now how many of you are willing to admit I was right when I said they would be straight out of the academy & way too young?

.....I eagery await your replies!

This is why people make fun of us normal fans.

You are what Leonard Nimoy called a "dickhead" on SNL.

And this is what the board rules call 'warnable behavior' on this board.

Warning for flaming.

Comments to PM.

Thanks for the explanation :)

Then I have to disagree with the 'old hand' not liking this movie bit. The vocal minority sure is loud though.

Yes very good, but i'm still waiting for the evidence you have for your claims. Why do you resort to riddles if its as obvious as you make out? Or are you going to change the subject again and talk about making soda pop next instead?

Make it quick, i dont' have all day.

I eagery[sic] await your replies!

Well, the film is a huge success and at least nine out of ten Star Trek fans rate it better than average. It has at least that high approval with the general public, and certainly with professional critics. It's making a ton of money.

And it should be successful, since it's a great movie. :techman:

I'm sorry, did you want to know something else?

Let's not forget, that since Kirk took the Kobyashi Maru test (3rd time in the movie), that means he was on the fast track for command. Saving Earth helps. And this is not the US Military as far as rules of promotion and protocol.

Yeah, the old timers I've talked to love it. I started watching in 1966, myself. I'm totally smitten.

First time in recorded history (which is saying something, given that we have about 16 years between us on this board) that I agree with Jeri.

I'm smitten too. :techman:

Started watching Star Trek as a toddler, before I could even walk, back in the 60's.

And I LOVE this movie. Loved every nono-second of it.

Might even go to see it twice in the theater - something I haven't done since Star Wars in 1977.

And will definitely grab the DVD.

Dayton3 has not actually seen the movie. He's admitted this in various threads.

- Ibrahim Ng

I've never been in prison either but I'm reasonably sure I would not like it.

Knowledge trumps experience everytime.

You haven't seen the movie. You have no intentions of seeing the movie and yet, you feels compel to criticize it.

Well...... :shifty:

Same ol' Dayton3. Keep it coming. :guffaw::techman:
I haven't it yet, but I intend to go see it hopefully this weekend.

Maybe I should defer to someone else on this......

One thing Abrams has never been, though, is a Trekker. Or a Trekkie. Or even a Trekkist. "Star Trek," he says, referring to the original TV series, "always felt like a silly, campy thing. I remember appreciating it, but feeling like I didn't get it. I felt it didn't give me a way in. There was a captain, there was this first officer, they were talking a lot about adventures and not having them as much as I would've liked. Maybe I wasn't smart enough, maybe I wasn't old enough. But The Twilight Zone I was obsessed with. Loved it."

The defense rests.
