Had earwax suction done today...

I can't believe how much my hearing is improved. I highly recommend it to anyone who is having any issues with it. Briefly through off my balance, though.

I had it done a while ago and was also surprised by how well I could hear again! My hearing was a little too sensitive for a while, with normal sounds seeming extra loud. I was also thrown off balance for a bit.

Never had it done, but my hearing is more than fine, in fact it's a little above average for my age.

And, though I know I shouldn't, I occasionally use Q-Tips to clear out ear-wax. But not by jamming the rod all the way in there and just going at it.... ( :vulcan:) Usually I just insert the tip and swirl it around to get the good stuff then pull out.

Okay... That came out odder than I intended.

Anyway, maybe I should look into an ear cleaning someday but, as I said, I don't have any serious hearing issues.

Was the wax impacted?

I had that done in college. I was wearing earplugs so I could drown out the neighbors while I was studying. I'm pretty sure the impacted wax was what made the whole process pinch and hurt so much. I thought I was friggin' dying.

But my hearing really improved after it was done. I was glad after I stopped whining about the pain. :rommie:

It was. The only thing that hurt when they got to the ear drum. Which took awhile. They actually switched to a higher power device part way through.

Crusher Bunny! How are you, my sweet?

I've had that done a few times. As a resul;t of a birth defect, one of my ear canals is so small that my doctors have to use an attachment for their thing that looks in the ear that is sized for a six month old. Wax buildup in that ear is such that it has to be dealt with about every three to four years.

Instead of using that suction thing though, my doctor likes to use a syringe designed for medicinal injections for horses. He puts about a quart of warm saline in there and injects it quickly into the ear canal. Slightly messy, but extremely effective.

What's that? I can't hear you! ;)

Yeah, I've had problems with buildup. I occasionally have to go and have it flushed out. Sometimes I don't even realize how bad it is until I actually get it flushed out, but there's a feeling of great relief afterwards. The last time it was bad enough that it caused ear pain due to the pressure and I didn't even know until that I had a buildup. Can be quite gradual.

My right ear tends to build it up. About ten years ago I figured out how to fill a rubber bulb with warm water and squeeze it into my ear in a small "jet". Not enough pressure to cause any harm, but enough to flush it out after repeating enough times. Throws off my balance pretty badly too; I usually have to lie down immediately.

Every two or three weeks I just pour hydrogen peroxide in each ear and let it sit there for a few minutes. The tingling sensation and bubbles are the wax being taken apart. One ear at a time, obviously. I tilt my head, let it pour out, use tissue to wipe as much as I can out, then use a Q-tip to carefully go in deeper and get excess hydrogen peroxide, since it can eat skin with long exposure (last thing you want is an ear drum of hairs eaten away).

As long as you don't do it more often than that, you'll be fine and you'll keep your ears clean. Especailly if you exercise a lot and/or wear ear plugs, which can make the inside dirty (you can hear and feel the difference from a dirty ear versus one that's kept fairly clean, when doing this).

I can get a bottle from Dollar General for a dollar and avoid a dcot'rs visit and bills.

Considering earwax does serve some function, what you're doing strikes me as pretty darn risky.

^ Some earwax is normal, yes. But not an excess of it. As long as it's done properly, and (ideally) by a doctor, what's the problem?

Although I agree in that you should never use a Q-Tip anywhere near your ear. THAT's dangerous.

^not for me it's not. I use a Q-tip inside my ear and have since I was old enough to do it. I never poke my eardrum and I've never had any problems with my ears or needed to have a professional remove the wax. Just be careful doing it.

Exactly, you stick it in carefully and turn it carefully and don't do it while doing other things, like walking, where you might accidently jam it in and screw yourself.

Also, the hydrogen peroxide can stop some ear infections. I had one once, then I started using HP and never again.

Also, like brushing your teeth, don't use Q-tips all the time -- you can actually do more harm than good.

Yeah, some people do get an excess which can cause problems over time, necessitating removal. In my case, it's done every few months.
