Are you referring to Chuck the dialling technician? In which case, that happened accidentally. The actor's name actually was Chuck, and during filming Torri Higginson accidentally called him Chuck. After that, the writers decided they might as well make that his name.
I don’t recall, was Nhan actually identified as an engineer? She didn’t seem to do anything engineering-related on the Hiawatha, and her bridge duty in the recent episode didn’t seem engineering-related either. Plus we know another person is Enterprise’s chief engineer, so it would seem odd to have another engineer who is a full commander.
I just assumed she was Pike’s security chief. That gives her a natural role on the Discovery now that Tyler is gone, and they didn’t seem to replace him. But I might have just missed or forgotten dialogue where she was specifically identified as an engineering officer?
Yep. At the start of the premiere the premiere Bryce reports "Captain Christopher Pike requesting to beam aboard with an engineer and a science officer." Connolly was clearly the science officer, which would make Naan the engineer.
Wouldn't be the first time the series has done that.
Same thing happened with Walter in SG-1, except that was Richard Dean Anderson adlibbing.
Though he did have an 'official' name on some props and costumes, it had never been said on screen, so they stuck with Walter.
I also think that Sgt. Siler was just named for the stunt coordinator who played him.
Incidentally, I really liked the redshirt bait-and-switch from that episode.
The actor's name is Dan Shae, so no.
My bad. Dan Shae was the stunt coordinator for the show.
What if her name was Lieutenant?
Having two people with the same first name in a show would be a little confusing for today's audience and we already have Airiam who would share that first name with her. That said, sure, it CAN be done and Airiam still has a middle name to distinguish the both. It would surprise me, thoughWhat if her name was Lieutenant?
My assumption was that he was granted a brevet promotion to Commander, and was allowed to wear the full stripes, while he was only a Lieutenant Commander formally. Final promotion came later.
Same difference.
I don't think it was lost in the mail as much as some sort of "trial promotion".
ADMIRAL COMSOL: "We want to promote you, Spock, and you did pass the Bridge Officers' Test with flying colors. But you also killed those doctors a few years back. Tell you what, we'll give you a one-year temporary promotion, and if you survive the trip outside the galaxy, and don't commit mutiny and get court martialed like your sister, then we'll gladly promote you to full Commander."
Spock gets promoted. Then commits mutiny and gets court martialed like his sister.

Actually, Walter's name is one of Stargate's more convoluted stories. In the first four seasons he wore a nametag that said Davis. Then in the fourth season episode 2010, RDA ad-libbed the name Walter. So it would seem at this point his name is Walter Davis. Then in the fifth season he began wearing a nametag with Norman Davis on it, and would continue to do so for the sixth and seventh seasons as well. Then in season 8 the writers finally decided to establish a name for him. They decided to stick with Walter as the first name since that was spoken in dialogue but had to come up with a new last name since there were legal issues with the name Walter Davis. For a last name they chose Harriman, based on a number of fans mistakenly believing that was his name claiming General Hammond called him that in the first season (Hammond in fact called him "Airman") and so in season 8 the character's name is firmly established as Walter Harriman and his nametag is changed accordingly.
Yep, Sgt. Siler was played by Dan Shea, who also served as the show's stunt coordinator and RDA's stunt double. In fact he was even RDA's stunt double way back on MacGyver.
Sgt. Siler's first name is likely Sylvester, since his nametag says Sly Siler.
