Growing your hair out

Ugh! I hate it. I want to grow my hair out, but it takes so frickin long. It is at an awkward length right now and will be for several months until it gets to the length that I want it. I do want to grow it out, but right now all I want to do is get it cut!

I'm conflicted.

Yes, the dreaded awkward stage! For women I recommend barrettes/pigtails, for men brushing it back behind the ears/hats/dealing (or barrettes if they want, of course).

It's not long enough to brush behind my ears. Actually, the sides look fine. It's the top that is too long (not long enough?). It's incredibly thick and kind of has a mind of its own right now.

If I liked hats, this would not be an issue, but I hate wearing hats.

I had long hair for years (down past my shoulder blades/pecs). Whilst I sympathise with you regarding the dreaded "awkward stage" I'm reminded of the fact that I no longer have hair to grow out. Your plight could be much worse... ;) :guffaw:

This is why I like being bald. Definitely not awkward, unless I cut myself shaving my head. Then there would be blood. Awkwardly.

Until I was ten years old, I wore my hair in a then-fashionable butch cut -- very short and sticking straight up in front. Some guys would even wax their hair in front to give it the proper stiffness. Then, when the butch started going out of style, my mother decided it was time to let my hair grow a bit longer. For the next several months, it stuck out embarrassingly in all directions as I tried to train it. I used all kinds of “greasy kid stuff” to plaster it down while it slowly gave up the fight and eventually submitted.

That reminds me -- it's about time for a haircut. I don't want folks stopping me on the street and asking what Woodstock was really like.

I wear my hair pretty long, but that's really because I don't want to pay for a haircut or do it myself. Plus it makes me feel like some crazy mystic in the morning when it sticks out in every direction with all sorts of knots and tangles.

I'm thinking of growing mine out. I've had a bob going on ten years now, and I'm getting bored. My hair used to be very long -- past my knees long. When I cut it into a bob I hacked of 36 inches in one go. I also have very thick hair, that stays thick and healthy even when it's exceptionally long. I figure I'll grow it out, and this time instead of donating it, I'll sell it for the 1 to 2 thousand it's worth!

I get ingrown hairs like crazy when I shave my face. I don't even want to know how my head would respond.

Thats why I just get it shaved to a 1. Extremely comfortable and no maintenance required.

Amen. Plus, in my case, my beard & mustache are so sparse and thin/pale that it takes a week before it looks like I need a trim.

I'll probably never bother to learn how to shave/get an electric razor

I never really understood the whole "learning to shave" thing. What's there to learn? Shaving cream...razor...go! I figured it out by myself the first time.

^^ Shaving without injuring oneself was an acquired skill back in the days of straight razors. The modern safety razor is just about idiot-proof.

I've been growing my hair out for a bit. When I got it cut in August, it was the first haircut I'd gotten since May 2009. It's long enough now that if it were straighter, it would be touching my collarbone in the front. Unfortunately I have very wavy and unruly hair - in the slightest humidity it gets very curly, and doesn't look like it's all that long.

About 20 years ago, I had it down to about an inch below my collarbone - and it was permed, so if it had been straight it probably would have been about halfway down my back. I think that took about three years to grow - and then I cut it all off for a production of Edward II. (I figured men in the 1920s, which was when we set the show, didn't have shoulder-length perms. Shocked the hell out of my castmates when I showed up on opening night with all my hair cut off.)

It's a scan of an 18-year-old newspaper article, but you can sort of make out the length of my hair in this (I'm on the left - that should be obvious, but just in case...):

That photo was taken at dress rehearsal, the night before opening night, so I literally cut it all off a few hours before we opened. :)

Unfortunately, this is the only photo I've been able to find from that period. I'm sure I'll post them if I ever find others. :)

I'm never happy with my hair, my hair grows pretty fast and almost Afros if left unattended, I do on occasions shave my head, particulary in the Summer when having lots of hair becomes a hassle

At the moment my hair is medium length, its curley and pretty bushey, but its good for not feeling the cold when out and about!

I currently have a soul patch that is longer and more luxurious than the hair on my head. What's up with that?!

I want to grow my hair out, but it takes so frickin long.

Once in a while, I think I want to grow my hair a bit longer but then it gets to that awkward stage you mention and that I can't stand it, so get it trimmed.

Mind you, I also have occasional thoughts of getting it all shaved off too, just to see what it would look like, so it's fortunate that these desires are merely transient.

I do have a somewhat receding hairline at the temples these days and a crown that is looking suspiciously lighter than it used to, both which I suspect will combine to render the entire internal debate moot in a score's time!

I generally prefer mine longer. When I had it short, I was getting comments of looking like 20/21 or something, which was kinda irritating.
