It's an OK article and I think it highlights what hamstrung Discovery from the beginning: fan expectations. It tried to balance connections (Sarek, Mirror Universe) with new facets and scientific understanding (Spore drive and new life forms). Unfortunately, the formula was unbalanced by BTS struggles, a complete reworking of the story while hanging on to already produced items like ship models, uniforms and sets.
Star Trek Discovery definitely broke new ground, and paved a new way for online Trek. That is appreciated but I think it will take decades before it gets the full appreciation.
