Will you buy Grand Theft Auto IV?

I've finally been able to get back to playing this game and I'm near the half way point (Just under 50% completed) and I have to say this game is moving from being fun to being a pain in the ass. It seems like all the missions now involve chasing somebody on a motorcylce (or worse yet some little scooter) or in a car, or even in a boat. I've already mentioned a time or two how much I DESPISE the driving in this game.

I hate to give up on it, but when it's not fun anymore, it's probably time to move on.

Really, I'm the worst driving game player in the world but I just haven't found the driving stuff in this game all that hard. The game wants you to catch up. You just have to pay attention. Sometimes there are chases where you can try shooting at the other car but you aren't supposed to be able to take them out (their car is bullet proof) so it's best to just follow them because they will crash at some predetermined point.

Got to say when you buy a game called grand theft auto, the clues are there that there might be some driving to do.

Yeah I know that Biotech, I'm not stupid. But they've taken it to extremes IMHO.

EDIT TO ADD: In prior incarnations of the GTA franchise, there was always plenty of racing and car chases, but it seemed like there were also more variety to the missions. Even GTA4 didn't seem too bad until recently.

Maybe it's just coincidence that I've hit a bunch of missions that seem to be the same thing, i.e. chase somebody through traffic (or thru the subway on a motorcycle, that was fun NOT!) and kill them. Once or twice, well okay, that's the game, but I've had several missions now that are EXACTLY the same thing. Not fun.

Oh yeah the subway mission was a real joy. First of all, the motorcyle was harder to control than normal when driving on subway tracks, and then you have to dodge subway trains (some of which seemingly appear out of no where) all while trying to shoot the two bikers ahead of you off of their bikes. Surprisingly I got it on about my 4th or 5th try but it was most definitely NOT fun.

The current chase missions that are driving up the wall are the "Bernie Crane" missions, the first consisting of chasing a homophobe on a scooter. I'm going to consult my gaming guide and if it's not necessary to complete the BC missions to progress the story, I'm just going to skip them.

Seriously folks, putting aside the argument about whether these missions (chase and shoot) are easy or not, does anyone truly find them to be fun? Do you look forward to playing them?

It's necessary to complete all of those missions to complete the story.

Honestly, as I said, I am useless at driving games but only the last mission took me more than two or three tries.

Dammit, I was afraid of that. Well then I guess I can try some of the other people and do as many of those missions as I can get through and then I guess I'll pack it in. Chasing a car all over town, dodging traffic just isn't fun to me. And I play video games to have fun, not be annoyed.

I did the subway bike mission just fine first time out.

If you are struggling with bike missions, just steal a bike and ride it round the city for a while before the mission to get a feel for it.

Usually when you are chasing someone, if you get too far behind they will slow down, you have to get really, really far behind, or stop altogether to lose them.

I've said this before, but don't try too hard. Don't drive like Jason Bourne, just try not to crash. The game wants you to keep up.

Well I kind of did that the first time I went through the second mission with BC, but eventually, over time, my car got damaged to the point where it caught on fire. And I never could catch up to the other car. And again, chasing the car for an extended period of time is just not fun.

Many of the chase missions are simply for you to follow them until you get to the cutscene, so you shouldn't have to worry about gunning and driving at the same time. Also, do you don't have to be right on their tail. Your GPS will allow you to follow them (and take different routes if necessary) even if you're lagging behind.

I'd probably be a little less annoyed with some of these if they weren't such a pain to replay. For example, this second Bernie Crane mission that PO'd me last night, you have to drive half way across one of the islands just to get to the cutscene where the actual chase begins.

The first time I tried it, I chased him quite awhile but after a LONG time I'd finally hit enough cars, light poles, what have you, along the way to finally set my car on fire. I bailed out to get another car. Bernie did not. The second time, I got a faster car, but yet got lost him very quickly. At that point, after playing several other chase missions last night, I was annoyed to the point of saying the hell with it. I probably would be in jail today if I could have gotten my hands on one of the game designer/programmers last night.

Oh this is just marvelous. I finally beat the car chase mission and I go on a do a couple of other missions and come back to Bernie Crane. Now it's a chase in a F'ing boat and heaven forbid you bump anything because you find yourself turned over and out of the mission.

Who in the F dreams up this shit and thinks it's fun? :klingon::rolleyes:

I can't wait until you get to the final mission.:guffaw:

I loved the scooter chase, R* is warped putting that in there, I couldn't stop laughing the first time.

I don't remember the boat mission exactly but I found those were usually fairly generous, try to go easy and not rock the boat so to speak.

Just got the game yesterday. Played a bit tonight. I found the SIXAXIS training scenario very addicting as I spent the majority of the 2 hours tonight on that alone. Yes I spent all that time just doing various motorbike stunts. Looking forward to the rest of the game.

I don't get the ending worries at all... it's all one interactive cutscene, so it should be easier than any of your chases.

Well I finally beat the Bernie Crane boat chase thing last night. I figured out that basically I just had to follow until they jumped out on land, and then kill the 3 guys there. The trouble is, everytime I did that, there were numerous beat cops in the vincinity and I got an instant wanted level with numerous cops shooting at me. Needless to say it didn't work out so well. Then on the final time, when I finally beat it, not one single cop showed up. Odd, but I'm not looking a gift horse in the mouth.

For some missions, cops will vanish immediately after you accomplish the task. Other missions, fleeing the cops is an added part of the mission.
