For me season 1 was the best.
I loved episodes like the defiant one letters from Pegasuses.
And for me the eye /the storm were the best mid season 2 parters and the siege the best series final of any of the seasons.

S1. The concept behind "Poisoning the Well" was interesting, and I liked "The Storm/The Eye" two-parter. The Genii stories worked very well at this point in the series.
I haven't seen but a few seconds of season five, but, just from reading comments here, I know I won't prefer it over season one.
Season one by a wide margin. The Wraith were still scary, the Genii worked, the premise of the characters being cut off from Earth was sustained until the end, and the cast of recurring and regular characters was stable throughout the entire year. If only the rest had been nearly as good as where the series started...

Basically, yeah ...
The Wraith at the time were scary, they were harder than hell to kill, and could NOT be killed by a single, simple bullet. They've since been dumbed down and de-scarified ... a paper cut can kill them now.
The first season was the only one with consistently good writing. They had an interesting character in Ford, they were completely cut off from Earth without starships and intergalactic gates making travel easy. It was also the only season when the Genii actually made sense. After that, they became generic bad guys.
Yup. Season one. The Siege being the highlight of the entire series. There were a wide variety of secondary characters. The entire main cast got good screentime and most importantly, the premise of being stuck and fending for themselves was kept. Once they connected to Earth and made it all about McKay they ran out of things to write. And Weir was awesome.
Season one or Season two. I voted 2 because Carson was given a bigger part which I loved.
Season one is the best and season 2 is the weakest but I enjoyed SG-A so much, so its not a bad thing that the opening season is the best, even though normally for shows the debut year is the least impressive.
Season 3,4 and 5 got better with each one and had some dam real epic episodes, I just think 1 edges them all.

Season 1 was great, but a few of my favorite episodes were during Season 4. First among them was Midway.
Season 1 wasn't perfect (Sanctuary), but there was definately potential with the Genii, Wraith, hell even the Athosians had a slight chance of becoming interesting. There were some great episodes in other seasons, but only during the first season did the show itself seem like it could be great.
Said perfectly. Actually, I found season three had a number of episodes I really like, but on the whole, it wasn't indicative of any sort of greatness. Season one suggested the possibility, but later years trampled it.

Season one. From then on each season got a little bit worse than the previous season until the huge drop in quality that was season five.
