For some people, "shiney with more buttons" equals more advanced.^The technology wasn't more advanced. They had a (really cool) grappller hook instead of a tractor beam, crappy transporters, no shields, could only reach Warp 5, and used animals in sickbay. I don't even consider the style more futuristic. The 60's style of TOS looks very weird and futuristic to me.
In "In a Mirror, Darkly", TOS's technological superiority is clearly demonstrated as a single Constitution-class starship kicks the Terran Empire's ass.
