The B story of Troi pursuing a promotion to Commander in "Thine Own Self" is great, I had completely forgotten that plot.
I agree in theory, but the test itself was deeply stupid. "Oh no, I have to tell a hologram to 'kill' himself."
There is a glaring difference in her character between Face of the Enemy and Disaster. I'm not really sure if it was the writers or Sirtis that screwed this up but both situations were dangerous and required quick thinking and a command attitude. In Face of the Enemy she is great but in Disaster its like she's a 10 year old girl who has no clue what is going on. I don't it.
So, [after wearing a uniform in the first episode] I got cleavage, and all my gray matter departed. Which was sad, because originally (I know this is gonna shock you), Troi was supposed to be the brains of the Enterprise. So when the cleavage came, all that left.
So I started to wear my spacesuit. I was thrilled to finally be in a spacesuit. Suddenly, I was smart again. My cleavage had gone. My gray matter came flooding back. I was on away teams! I was the leader of one away team! I had a medical tricorder! And unlike Beverly, I seemed to know what was wrong with people.
It's the lack of cleavage post "Chain Of Command." That's the change.
Marina Sirtis explains it best:
On her season 6 costume change:

Well women with cleavage really can't be taken seriously.![]()
have to admit that is great the way she gradually collapses.I like how Troi unravels with Data what's going on in "The Loss."
Haha ya. Out of all the unflattering moments in this episode.. Scary as it was seeing dear Capt full frontal (though u could always laugh with Madred that he has a BDSM thing!) I disagree with Jellico strongly. attribute to the "for times sake" of the show. (Lets start a non relevant TNG ramblings thread..!) If I were her I wouldve gotten Nechayev on the line ASAP. Couldve even gotten him to authorize rescue mission - would show his bad demeanour as Capt.(&his eyes are clearly in the wrong places!!) Either Troi has been fouling the dress code or he has no right to even suggest that. (speaking as someone who put a certain hair dress code top story here in Toronto!!!)
Thank the Prophets for Jellico! And as much as I disliked Captain Jellico, I do give him credit for getting Deanna into uniform. As much as I enjoy looking at her in those outfits, not only does the uniform force people to take her more seriously, but they were fairly form fitting, too. Having a woman in uniform can be quite sexy, too.
When she took charge of the situation in Face of the Enemy.
