Gold uniforms

Technically, security is also in charge of weapons and defense systems. If you look at it in this sense, it makes more sense. Blue=Science Red=Command Gold=Technical

In that light, though, the TOS uniform systems don't make sense.

Pike Era

Gold
Command, Helm, Tactical (presumably)

Blue
Medical, Science, Security

Coral
Engineering, Communications, Navigation, Admin

Kirk Era

Gold
Command, Helm, Tactical, Navigation

Blue
Medical, Science

Red
Engineering, Communications, Admin, Security, JAG, Misc.

In the modern US Navy, these would be distributed thus:

Red
Construction

The Kelvin system, btw, was:

Blue
Command, Helm, Tactical

Brownish Green
Engineering, Communications/Telemetry

Gray
Science, Security (if the Starfleet Shipyard website was correct)

White
Medical

I am not referring to TOS. The creators of TV shows in the 60s couldn't give 2 shits about keeping things in a logical fashion.

I don't think the creators of TOS were that concerned about uniform consistency. They were more concerned about producing a TV show on a tight budget.

So many things like Uniforms and what department wore which evolved over time.

I am pretty certain that the creators didn't realize that almost 50 years later there would be this thing called the internet where people would be nit picking tiny details of the show.

And yet the show had more verisimilitude than anything that came after it.
Of course, you'd actually have to have watched it before shooting off your mouth to know that.

there is another reference to changing uniform colours: Worf switches to red after taking a post on DS9 and O'Brien (i think, or Sisko) comments about him wearing red uniform, after him previously being in gold.

of course, he was returning to red after starting out in red in TNG season1...
