Glee

I love the show. It's quirky and legitimately funny, and yet still manages to hit some decent dramatic bits. I think of the characters less as stereotypes and more as archetypes.

I do wonder if we're going to see some focus on the other young cast, beyond Rachel and Finn.

The gag reflex joke last night was worth the whole series being greenlit.

Was that the flashback to Finn's first driving practice running over the guy. That was really the only part I really laughed at. Everything else was just quirky fun. Love that Jane Lynch is in this series. The more I see her, the more I like her.

No it was when Rachel was trying unsuccessfully to puke and she says "...I guess I just don't have a gag reflex."

To which Emma responds: "One day when you're older that'll turn out to be a gift."

Ah, ok. That was a pretty good scene too.

This show isn't meant to appeal to everyone (but then, what is?). It's for any kid that stood in front of a cynical auditorium full of their classmates and sang, danced, or acted their hearts out--something the creators of the show have said in interviews that they did.

I was never brave enough to join the drama program, but I always wished I had. Maybe some kid will see this show and decide to audition at their school. I hope so.

Anyone else looking forward to the Soundtrack to this show? I've been quite addicted to the song Lea Michele did at the end of the second episode and it's just really well done. I then Heard Rihanna's version and the Glee one is so much better. This week it's take a Bow, last week was Don't Stop Believin'. I'm almost about to say forget the show, I look forward to the last 5 minutes every week.

For those interested parties ...

A limited edition dvd of the director's cut (Wednesday's long version) is now available at Wal-Mart. And only Wal-Mart. It's five dollars, and includes the director's version of the episode (complete with extra song), a "Dance Boot Cam" featurette, "Deconstructing GLEE with Ryan Murphy" featurette, "What is GLEE?" featurette, and "Sneak-Peak of Episode Two."

Also, if you buy the dvd, it comes with a coupon inside. Each coupon has its own individual code, and you can go to www.gleetshirtoffer.com, put the code in, and they will send you a free Glee tshirt. They pay shipping and everything. Five bucks for the dvd and shirt? That's not a bad deal.

And yes, I did just get from Wallyworld, having bought the dvd. Why do you ask?

Damn! Sounds great, but Hubby and I don't shop at Walmart since they play shenanigans with benefits for their employees. I heard they're improving their "green" status, but, as yet, no real improvement on benefits.

Rather pay more and lose out on great offers than put money into the wallets of the Walton family and not more into the employees.

I saw the first episode when it first aired back in May. I decided not to continue watching. It's just not for me.

But, you did watch it. And that means you have an informed opinion. If you try it and don't like it, that's one thing. If you don't even give it a chance and assume you won't like it? That's another thing entirely. I'm glad you at least gave it an honest chance.

Has anyone heard whether this'll air anywhere that we can get it in the UK? I love cheesy musical extravaganzas, and Jane Lynch owns a timeshare of my soul, so it sounds like something I'd love.

The Glee songs, including the 2 you mentioned, are available as singles on iTunes if you have that.

It felt like the funny lines were given to actors who couldn't deliver on them and the ones who could (like Jane Lynch) were given nothing.

Matthew Morrison felt really weak as a lead too. It's much funnier having an actor who can react to the crazy storm around him as well as participate in it (think Luke Wilson in Idiocracy or Paul Rudd in Role Models) rather than just being oblivious to it.

This show has quickly become a favorite, and last night's episode was my favorite yet. Kurt, the little gay boy who could, is forced to join the football team, and ends up saving the day. After six losses in a row (including one to a deaf school's team), it's Kurt who wins it for them. And I don't think I've ever laughed as hard as I did when the entire team does Beyonce's "Put a Ring on It" dance routine, on the field.

I'm also thrilled it's already been renewed!

Are y'all still watching?

Yeah if you aren't watching this show you better start. Last night's episode was by far the best. The amount of little jokes and just silliness was awesome. Loved it.

Question for those who like it: Does it remind you of your school?

I was telling my wife why I don't like Glee. I said that I like 'Better off Ted' because it's full of exaggerated parodies of real office-life. In fact, 'The Office' is like that too. I really know toned-down versions of most of the characters on those two shows!

But 'Glee' is just full of movie stereotype. The bitchy cheerleader? The tough black girl? The homophobic football players? This is stuff ripped out of lame movies that bear no resemblance to reality. It's not a parody or a spoof or even funny. It's just lame rip offs that weren't interesting the first time.

That's when my wife said something interesting. She noted that perhaps our high school was unique (I think she's right about that) and that these characters ARE parodies of real schools in the same way that 'The Office' is a parody of work.

So what do you all say? Does any of this remind you of real life? Does it seem at all familiar? Because that I can understand. But outside of that possibility, I see no value in it. And 'Glee' does not remind me of high school at all.

(Oh, and what's the point of choreographing elaborate dance numbers if you're going to cut shots every 1.5 seconds? The director is practically TELLING us that the dancing sucks and he's trying to hide it! I actually think they're quite good, so I don't understand why they're trying to make us THINK they're bad dancers. Let us see them dance!)

Are we watching the same show? The point is to have these stupid lame stereotypes, poke fun at them, and be over the top and then break them down and make them real and interesting. I think it's funny as hell, last night's episode was great fun.

I pretty much agree with you. And it is just TOO over the top, so much so that the "real" moments end up feeling parodied and cliched.

I will add that the show is progressively making me dislike characters more and more. That along with the fact that the musical numbers have gotten progressively less inspiring has me thinking I'm done watching this one.

I actually didn't like the last episode as much. It was too predictable, and they seemed to have changed out the musical numbers for bullshit teen melodrama. They really need to deep six the "I'm pregnant" subplots and ice out the annoying secondary characters.

But when you take "over the top" characters from other films and make "over the top" parodies of them...it's awful hard to tell the difference.

In other words, I didn't even know Glee was TRYING to be an over-the-top parody until my wife pointed it out.

That's a problem.

Not for me.

My 16 year old son adores the show and wonders if there's something wrong with him. Not at all, I assure him--I like it too.

Wait, was that reassuring?
