Giving STO Another Try

Story was good, visuals are good, but what is not good was manual firing and having to spam the fire button in the ground section like its was 2010 again, that was a nightmare, i won't be running through that mission in a hurry again. Lol

Story and cutscenes were the best part of the new episode for me. I don't think I've ever solidly cussed my way through an entire level of STO before. Got through it, though as mentioned the manual fire was a pain and the enemy spam was something else. Then to top it off I didn't get the mission rewards and it's like I never played the level. Why u do me dirty STO? WHHHY?!

^^^Just stick with counterpoint TFO if you just want the daily towards the free T6 ship........but the manual firing is a nightmare, this is how the games ground combat was all those years ago and it was horrible, hours into one tfo as 5 pugs try and complete the borg ground tfo was something to behold back then, all with manual fire and target, comical to think back on now, but not funny at the time. lol

Best bit of the new story mission was seeing a California-Class ship in the Alliance fleet AND it made it home safe with us.

Yeah as much as I appreciate the artistry that went into the new episode I won't be playing it again. As you say, Counterpoint TFO is a quick win, I've also found the episode Blue Shift is pretty quick to tear through if you've got some good area control kit modules.

STO is a weird one, I've known about it since the start, but only picked it up in the last four years, so yeah, i wasn't there for the manual fire thank goodness! I've made up for it though, I have more alts than I'd care to admit :)

Ha yeah I noticed that, I kinda focused in on it and forgot to pay attention to the rest of what was going on. I see they're keeping the ol star cruisers in the mix as well, probably thanks to Prodigy.

STO ground combat was always very clunky from day one, and the only thing that makes it playable today was the addition of auto fire and auto target, of course i think you can get around that manual fire and target by using one of those STO scripts that alot of people use that does everything when you press one button, never used one myself as it seems way too complicated to just set up, so i just stick with auto fire and look after my sheild and health. ha

It sounds like it is still actively supported. I'm wanting to try and get it going on my Steamdeck but it seems its a bit of a challenge to get it working or to update without crashing! I've never really played a MMO and it does look like fun.

The Steamdeck OS is based on LINUX. As such it won't run STO natively (and I don't know if you can run any version of WINE on the Steamdeak OS.) You'd also probably have issue reading anything on the 7" screen.

STO is designed to be played on a Windows 10 (or 11) PC, with large readable PC monitor; of on a full Console (XBox or XBoxOne or PS4 or PS5)

Thank you for the info. I will maybe give it a go on my laptop and see how it plays on there.

I seemed to remember someone talking about STO and Steamdeck on Reddit awhile ago. A quick google of 'STO Steamdeck' seems to bring up a number of Reddit posts along with some youtube videos, so it does seem like it's possible, but I can't give any assurances to how easy it is to do or if there are any other concerns. Noname Given is right though, ideally you'd be playing on a platform with a larger screen as the STO steamdeck vids seem to involve most the screen being given over to UI.

I've been playing STO for about 4 years, at this point I'm just dipping in and out, but I've had fun with it. It launched in 2010, so set expectations accordingly, but there's a lot of material there, it's definitely worth a look.

I think this is more a case of running the launcher from the SD desktop rather than just through steam as i tried, but i have not messed with the SD decktop area yet but will at some point because emulation seems to be great on this system.

Well i can confirm that STO works on the Steam deck, and works well, you need to drop down some if the setting as it picks max on everything, but you can fine tune it to run great on the deck, runs and looks better than on my gt1030, and you do not even need a mouse and keyboard as people have been making community cintrol templates you to use that make the pc version control more akin to the console version, which is a feat in itself.
Cracking stuff. :-)

Envious. I haven’t really played since midway through gamma quadrant cos my laptop started creaking and I never get the time.

Doing gravity kills in that ship is a lot of fun, basically start the tfo, the go full jelly fish at the back of the map, then watch as the black holes drags you to it and you become a moving kill box. Lol
Another thing you can do is install the "Fiery Charge" universal console, found originally on a Fek'Ihri Gok'tad Carrier. If a large group of ships is within the requisite range, you can periodically jump right into the middle of them and wipe them all out in a matter of seconds. I've done that frequently on the Tholian Red Alert and Gamma Quadrant "Swarm" TFO's. It provides quite a satisfying result.

Nice, will give that a try..............plus if you just did the recent free ship event for the terran empire ship, it comes with a console that add 28% more electrical damage, so stick thst on the already over powered jelly fish and say goodnight Gracie. Lol
