girls oon boy's sports teams in HS: wrestling, football..what say you?

Re: girls oon boy's sports teams in HS: wrestling, football..what say

What's the difference between a first down and a touchdown? When does a team punt?

Huh....I actually know these now, at least mostly. Funny what a year's worth of Friday games with a dozen software engineers will do.

Now if only I could throw the ball without it spinning end-over-end....

Can we drift back to my original topic.

It's November..and HS wrestling rosters are forming. some teams have girls on them, ready to wrestle guys.. What do you think of this?

On one hand, good for the girls being able to compete and earn a spot on the team.

But on the other hand, it does create kind of a lose-lose-lose for any guy she wrestles.

He may see the girl as a girl and not go as hard as he would against a guy, either from some notion of "not picking on girls" or just being afraid/ apprehensive to touch a girl in the "wrong" spot, lest he get accused of something inappropriate.

If he wins, he gets told he should have beaten a girl and receives little to no glory from it.

If he loses, then he carries the stigma of "getting beat by a girl" around.

From the girl's point of view, if she competes and wins or at least is competitive in matches, her sexuality can be called into question and she's carrying the "dyke" tag around school.

Just a couple of examples from beer league hockey - women who play well and outplay men are often referred to as dykes. One of our d-men had a great comeback to that, she said "You're just pissed we don't let you watch". (the goalie was and still is her partner)

If a guy gets schooled by a girl, he hears about it.

In an ideal world, it shouldn't matter. HS is less than an ideal world.

No, I call soccer boring because nothing happens. You give 2 teams 24 hours to play non-stop, and you might end up with a grand total of 7 points in the game.

And they're constantly going back and forth during that time. The action never lets up. That's not to say I'd watch Soccer on TV, but it's really fun to play because you have to be ready to move constantly. It's much better exercise than football.

Otherwise, it's just a bunch of guys chasing a ball.
Whereas Football (American), to the uninformed observer, looks like a line of guys crashing into each other and then stopping 10 seconds later, then waiting 5 minutes and doing it again to very little effect. Now *that* is boring.

As I said I've been playing a bit of it recently and now that I know a thing or two about the rules it's a bit more interesting. However, it's still a much slower game than soccer.

Same reason I hate watching baseball: nothing happens.
Baseball is a lot like American football, actually: One team on offensive at a time, one play at a time, and the action stops when the play is over. (Unfortunately, no number of runs can bring you back to "first out".) It's more a game of skill and strategy, though, whereas Football is more about brute force. (That's not to say skill isn't important in football, it's just a more blunt form of it is needed.)

When a strong baseball team plays a weaker one, you're right, not much happens. And when two bad teams play it just goes on forever. The best games are those between two strong, relatively evenly-matched teams-----there are enough hits to keep things interesting, but the score stays close enough to keep the outcome in doubt. I suspect this is why Red Sox vs Yankees is such a popular rivalry.
