GhostBusters 3 is Finally Being Made. (2020 Release)

Old fashioned Outdoor movie theaters are the answer!

Apparently the remaining drive-ins are having a slight resurgence, due to the pandemic, but there's still the issue of the snack bar and restrooms.

Especially since concessions are where most movie theaters make their money.

I suppose that's true, but 40 yrs ago when I used to visit these theaters, we brought our own snacks and drinks and I don't remember ever going to the snack bar or restrooms (even when guzzling lots of beer). We made our own heat, too, heh heh. I think there is less overhead with outdoor theaters. Some of these theater owners are already petitioning to get current and new movies.

As I mused in the MLB thread in the Sports forum, I'm skeptical if we'll even get a season this year, so more and more film delays to much later is becoming less surprising. It sucks like hell, but it's not surprising.

I'm thinking that once this all blows over, places like movie theaters and sports venues are going to see a massive resurgence simply owing to the fact that we're all basically shut in right now and will be desperate to do anything away from home. While we may miss out on soccer and baseball right now (football remains to be seen), movie theaters and hockey arenas are going to be jam packed.

Either that, or people will realize they don't "need" certain things that have been forcibly removed from their routine and not feel the continued "need" to return to them once the green light is given, as they've found other (possibly more productive) things to replace them.

I don't think I've ever been to one, because the only one that was in town closed in the mid-80's after we moved there, and ironically it was right next door to one of those old-style A&W where you'd park and have your order brought to you. These places had social distancing figured out before there really was a need for it!

Actually it's predicted to be the opposite

The news for movie theaters was particularly grim, with 49% of respondents saying it would take “a few months” to “possibly never” for them to return, and 28% saying they will attend movie theaters less often once they’re safe. While 15% of respondents said they plan on going to the movies more often post-pandemic (and 58% said their attendance won’t change), the net effect suggests an alarming erosion of theatrical returns that exhibitors and studios alike can ill afford.

This pandemic has scared people. I'd say it takes 10 years to get back into the post corona virus mentality.

Wow. I find that particularly distressing. My movie going was already curtailed a little because my wife and I have been too busy, but we usually saw a film once or twice every couple of months. But right now, I am desperately missing going to the theater and I am JONESING for movie theater popcorn. The microwave and stovetop stuff just isn't the same. sighhhhh

I don't think it'll affect our cinema trips so much. (There's usually a fair amount of space at the times we go so people tend to sit in their own little groups).

Going to movies is one of the few things my mom and I do, so I don't see our moviegoing habits changing once everything is back up and running.

If there is one positive to this, I suspect in coming years movie theatres might actually be forced to lower their prices as a means of luring people back.

At the moment, the theatre situation hasn't gotten to me too much yet since there wasn't anything coming out in March I planned on seeing anyway. Indeed, the next movie I was going to see was No Time to Die.

Honestly, even after this pandemic gets controlled and we go back to “normal” I’d be hesitant to go back to the theaters.
Back in the day, going to the theater was the only way to see a new movie on the big screen. It might be as long as a year before you were able to rent it for your small box TV. Waiting in long lines and being elbow to elbow with strangers was worth it to see these amazing stories on the big screen, compared to cheesy sitcoms and a handful of dramas on TV.

Now we all have big screen, HD-TVs, streaming TV has produced shows that are better than most films, the variety is amazing, and even big films are available on DVD just months after release.

Why bother being uncomfortable with a packed crowd of strangers?

I love the experience of cinema, but i think it’ll become more and more niche, aside for the tradition of seeing Marvel/Disney blockbusters.

Why bother being uncomfortable with a packed crowd of strangers?
Well, that's the main difference with my theatre experience. Very rarely do I see movies in a packed theatre, even the major releases. I had plenty of leg room when I was Avengers Endgame and Rise of Skywalker last year, for example. Indeed, the last time I remember needing to sit next to someone who I wasn't with was the Blade Runner sequel, and that for some reason was placed in one of the multiplex's smaller theatres.

We always go to one of the earliest showings, so the theater is rarely more than half fun.
There are a lot of big movies that really do need to be seen on the biggest screen possible, so I can't see giving them up.

Well, when I do go to the theater I make sure not to go during peak times ie opening weekends, not during weekend nights, and I usually seek out the theaters that are typically less crowded.

If the theater experience is typically sparsely populated with half the seats filled up at best, that's good for a movie goer like me, but I'd imagine bad for the theater as a business.

It's interesting that movie theaters are coming up with new innovations to entice more of the public to patronize them, and yet the current state of movie going has me less likely to go. They've come up with new innovations to compete with the home theater experience like heated leather La-Z-boy recliners, ability to drink alcohol before or during the movie, etc. But I miss the ability to go to the art house cinemas, and second-run theaters. Most, if all of those have gone out of business or been bought up by larger chains in order to put in the next cookie-cutter restaurant/bar/theater Marvel movie house.

Even the idea of marquee posters in the lobby is in a way, outdated. You're more likely to see the trailer on your phone before you see the teaser poster in your local theater.

In regards to GB3, I don't know if I'm too excited about it. Stranger Things-meets-Ghostbusters, complete with 80s nostalgia. I was perfectly happy with what we got in the era that Ghostbusters came out.

Likewise for us. It's usually a weekend morning.

A different view, but I actually think that while people are obviously scared now, I think movie theatres are a business that will bounce back relatively quickly. When this is over, people will be looking for things to do after being in isolation for so long, and they might even be more willing to be paying more

That poses an interesting dilemma to smaller theatre chains. Our second theatre in town is basically a second-run/art house type, but it's also part of a small chain that has already expressed financial trouble, so it makes me wonder how it will weather the storm when they have less resources at hand that bigger national chains are more likely to have and survive.

I'm a little worried about our usual theater, since it's part of a smaller local chain. They are in several states in the western part of the country, so I'm hoping they're at least big enough to survive. The only other theaters near us are a couple AMCs and literally every time we've gone to one of them it's been a bad experience. I will confess one of those was on me, since I couldn't take the volume in the IMAX theater, but there were several other times that were all their fault.
