Ghostbusters 2016: Talk about the movie(s).

It's brilliant because it's a hearse.

I thought so too.

I quite like it. It's definitely a bit different, but very much in the same vein as the original.

It's been so long that I've seen Ghostbusters that I didn't even notice how different this new version looks.

I've never seen it, but it's probably less a "siren" (which is actually the noise made by emergency vehicles) and just more of a caution light. I see school buses, garbage trucks and other large work trucks with similar flashing orange lights on them. They're less "move over! emergency here!" and more "notice this vehicle!"

Usually the emergency lights on the police escort are there for the slowing of traffic and to get people to pull over.

What's interesting to me is that this new car is at least 6 years older than the original Ecto 1 was in 1984. (2015-1984ish = 31, 1984-1959 = 25) In my mind though, I just can't think of this car as "old", probably since I actually lived through when it was new.

What's the siren light on a hearse used for?

Where I live a hearse on its way from church to burial site is allowed to go through red lights along with the cars making up the funeral procession. The siren is used as it is with emergency vehicles to make its presence known to other vehicles before proceeding.

Plus, normally the hearse is the second car, the lead car does stop for red lights but if the light turns red in the middle of a long line, then the others are usually allowed to keep going to stay together.


I think the new car is fine. It just looks a little too nice, some dents or rust would be more in keeping with the old ambulance, but then maybe this was a car that wasn't used much. Maybe someone's uncle was saving it?

Once repaired the old ambulance didn't have "dents and rust" in it.

It's not uncommon at all for a production to have multiple vehicles to act as "one." Usually one being the "hero vehicle" that's meant to stand in and be the ultimate look for the vehicle used for closeups or when the vehicle is on camera. Then there's usually at least one secondary vehicle to be used in shots of it moving, being used in stunts, etc. This vehicle usually is less detailed but better equipped for use in stunts and scenes of it moving.

So far I'm really liking the design of the new movie. It's different, but it still looks like Ghostbusters. I hope the villain isn't Gozer or they at least tell the story differently.

I do want Slimer in it. I got to have Slimer.

That's what I was thinking.

It's less showy than the original, which makes sense considering the other production decisions so far.

I would have made it a Ford Econoline van, or a Chevy van.

I don't have a problem with that either! I was afraid they were going to go with something futuristic or stupid like the proton packs from Extreme Ghostbusters

It wasn't that unless you think that having a handicapped guy, a woman, and a black man is wrong.

Loving the cartoon and that shit isn't wrong, but when people conflate that with the movie(s), then that's where things fall apart. It's not unlike all of the "Beetlejuice Goes Hawaiian" talk that somehow has faded away -- people not around for the movie remember the cartoon and want to see Winona Ryder and Michael Keaton have wacky adventures, forgetting that Betelgeuse was originally trying to force an underage girl to marry him.

If you think that's crazy, you should see the fan art.

Oh I spotted it right away. It helps that I have watched the original Ghostbusters so many times I can quote it by memory.

That's the thing that drives me nuts about fans. If Feig had done everything exactly the same -- costumes, props, car -- people would be bitching, "Well, if they're just doing the same movie all over again, why bother?" Feig changes things up, and everyone's bitching, "That looks nothing like the original!" It's a lose-lose proposition.

The movie will succeed or fail on its own merits, not based upon how much it adheres to or differs from the original. Jesus Christ.
