But if you want to complain when somebody makes superficial judgments about you, you have to complain when they make positive superficial judgments too. She is approached by record company executives and told: "More people will buy your album if we make you look artificially hot in ways that normal women can't possibly live up to, which will make them feel bad about themselves", and she says "Sounds good, where's the check?"

You're also taking it too far in terms of statements. If someone makes a passing statement commenting that you're handsome, you take it as a compliment. It might make you feel a little better the rest of your day. Someone comes along and says you're a fat ass, and now you feel awful. What did you do to deserve that kind of rancor? Do you honestly equate the two comments as if they should both be acceptable?

To put it another way, if someone gives you $5, and another person steals $5 from you, is it all okay because it balances out?

I wouldn't attribute it to "society" as a whole. It tends to be a small but vocal minority who trade in this sort of nonsense. If anything, we're talking more about this sort of behavior, calling it out when it happens and shaming people who act this way.
