George & Bill's "Feud"

Rather than calling him rude, I'd be more inclined to praise Shatner for bothering to learn their names at all. :D
He didn't, though. He couldn't remember Walter's name even when Trek V was about to come out.

We've all had those mental blocks, and for an actor that would be quite embarrassing! As far as knowing the full names of his co-workers, I've tended not to know the full names of the people I've worked with over the years - unless I needed to. Why would Shatner need to know Takei's surname? He's not doing the accounting, he's just working with him on a soundstage. "George" is good enough.

And it's interesting that TFF is being used as 'evidence' of Shat's ego: From what I hear, it was exactly the opposite. Most of the rest of the cast had high praise for Shat as a director - that he was a professional at all times, treated everyone with respect and courtesy, and there was never any of the baggage normally associated with him as a co-star.

I've heard this, as well. My understanding is that Shatner went out of his way to make sure each of his co-stars had at least one memorable scene in the film, something that wasn't the case when either Nimoy or Meyer was directing.

I really hate this kind of bitching about Shatner for decades. I hate to break this to Koenig, Takei, Nicholls and Doohan...but they were extras. Glorified extras.

Shatner, Nimoy and Kelley were the main cast [in that order]. When the others talk about 'being held back' or whatever I can't help but laugh.

This. As much as Takei and Nichols want to believe that TOS had seven stars, it really had only thee. What's more, it's unlikely the four co-stars would have gained the attention and popularity they have without Shatner and Nimoy carrying the series. Star Trek has given each of them opportunities they'd likely never have had; blaming one of the people who made the series what it is doesn't make sense.

I have a vague recollection of Shatner trying to figure out where this all came from. He has admitted many times that he could have been more aware that his actions and attitudes towards his colleagues could have been misinterpreted. But he has since postulated that perhaps some of these hard feelings evolved later on, long after the show was cancelled, when science fiction conventions placed all the actors on equal footing with each other and with the fans. Each actor had their own niche market of the fan base and that fan base clearly led each actor to believe that they were a great actor and should have been recognized as such and treated better by the "1st Tier" actors and staff. This led to the inflation of egos all around, which might have been what caused all this kerfuffle in the first place. An interesting study in unintentional psychological manipulation and the ability for the human mind to exhibit severely unreliable revisionist tendencies.

As for George, he really should start trying to mellow out in his old age. The causes he champions are extremely important and worthy of effort, and I have great respect for him for that. However, I fear that he is becoming more of a parody of himself than Shatner could ever hope to achieve, and that the integrity of his goals and causes he supports may suffer from his shenanigans. Time to let it go, George, and let your ideals stand on their own merit rather than derive corrupted power from the imagined rivalries of the past.

As it was stated, give it up George. Shatner don't even mention you, you are more than 60 years old, start to be a mature adult and accept things and get on with life, sheesh.

Thread Drift 101:

As I recall, Rand called the plant "Beauregard" and said it was male, while Sulu called it "Gertrude" or something, and insisted it was female. I'll have to go check my season set.

FormerLurker,

You are correct. Here is that scene courtesy of Chrissie's Transcripts Site (http://www.chakoteya.net/).

[Life Sciences Section - Botany department]

RAND: Where are you, Sulu?
SULU: In here feeding the weepers, Janice.
RAND: I've got your tray.
SULU: May the Great Bird of the Galaxy bless your planet.
RAND: Thank you. Hello, Beauregard. How are you today, darling?
SULU: Her name's Gertrude.
RAND: No, it's a he plant. A girl can tell.
SULU: Why do people have to call inanimate objects she, like she's a fast ship.
RAND: He is not an inanimate object. He's so animate he makes me nervous. In fact, I keep expecting one of these plants of yours to grab me.
SULU: Hello, Green.
RAND: He's not talking today. You been nipping saurian brandy or something?
(Beauregard starts screeching and slithers down into it's stem. Green rushes out)
SULU: (stroking plant) Take it easy. Calm down. Very sensitive.
RAND: He's the real spook. Suppose he's going space happy or something?

Mirror Sulu was a badass.
Can help but thinking that if Sulu's look and general demeanor had been similar to Mirror Sulu right from the start Takei might have gotten more screen time and interesting dialog.

I doubt it. The show and the way it was produced mainly had Sulu and the other characters as background.

Even if they showed more attitude, they still would have been relegated to support acting.

They did get some meaty scenes, from time to time though.

But it was mainly all about either Kirk, Spock and Mccoy.
