Spoilers General Disco Chat Thread

If the strike does get in the way of the reshoots, and the strike goes on for a while, they should just release S5 as is with the original ending, and save a "proper" finale for one of those TV movies they're going to be doing, that can be written after the strike is finished.

It would be a very expensive undertaking to have to reshoot the reshoots because they weren't permitted to make changes on set due to the writers' strike.
Or they'll just shoot what is already written. As pointed out above, it has happened before.

Was there ever an explanation given for why Mary Wiseman was written off Discovery for several episodes? Was it budgetary? Everything I've read about it was about the journey of the "character" but not the actress.

I can't remember the source but I seem to remember rumors about her joining a theater production in New York during the filming of the season that ended up with her being forced to stay there in quarantine and/or being limited by travel restrictions after a COVID breakout among some of the crew, forcing the Disco writers to shelve most of what was written for her during mid-season. Again, I might be just talking out of my butt here.

I believe the issue was Mary got sick part way through filming of season 4 (I won't say why) and then took the play after she had free time from filming after her recovery.

Since the Star Fleet Academy series is sent in the 32nd century; I'm sure one purpose (but not the only one as I'm sure they're going to have a proper series ending) of the reshoots is to lead into and handoff the 32nd Century elements of the Federation into that show; and perhaps introduce some of its lead characters.

And with the other Hollywood guilds effectively sympathizing with the WGA, I don't see any Star Trek production continuing until the WGA strike is over. Plus at the end of June we may see two other Hollywood unions also go out on strike: SAG/AFTRA (the Actors Guild), and the Director's Guild of America; whose contracts both end in June 2023.

So if production isn't halting right now; it will definitely be halted at the end of June.

I'd have preferred seven seasons, but the way I would've had it would've been:

Seasons 1 and 2 as is.
Season 3 split into "Season 3" and "Season 4".
Season 4 would become "Season 5".
Season 5 would become "Season 6".
"Season 7" would finally make sense of "Calypso". (Hey, I'm saying what I'd do!)

So, except for that last bit, I feel like I'll have mostly gotten what I would've wanted anyway. And under the circumstances (we're not getting the seven seasons I wanted), I won't complain that Season 3 condensed things towards the end.

Shoot was finished April 26th. It took place over 3 days, and designed to do so before the May 1st strike vote.

So basically nothing earth-shattering. They probably either added something extra, knowing it was the end, or they tied up something that was left hanging for what would've been the sixth season. Maybe both.

Third possibility: They shot something quickly that would further set up Starfleet Academy, since that's where it looks like the Disco branch of Trek is heading next.

A short coda or two, I'm guessing probably like the end of Picard. Maybe a time jump, and maybe a few teary eyes.

The most likely added footage is something to tie the end of the series properly into Calypso...which IMHO doesn't need to occur, but ever since they decided to make Zora a character in the third season they seem to be building towards this.

While I think they'll tie into "Calypso", I think they'll do this in a Mini-Series or TV Movie, not Disco Proper. You can't do a tie-in like that with just one scene. Well, technically you can, but if you're going to go there, then really go there.

If they want to do a TV Movie every two years, connecting to "Calypso" is the most obvious choice after Section 31. Both are connected to Discovery, but also exist outside of the series' normal scope, making them different enough to justify having TV Movies about.

I'd like to see more of wherever and whenever Craft is from. They can do something with that. And it's a second chance for them to do what I thought they were going to do when Discovery went into The Future.

I mean, all they really have to do now is abandon Discovery in a nebula for...some reason or another.

Oh, and I guess they'd need to undo its 32nd century upgrades, though that could be handled via just re-rendering a few shots from Calypso if they really wanted visual continuity.
