Spoilers General Disco Chat Thread

The projector has arrived! I'm prepping for my shoot tomorrow as we speak (a film called The Holy Maple Tree that I wrote and am directing, we were shooting it last week too) -- taking care of craft services -- so win-win on both fronts! This weekend is going to Kick Ass.

And when we're wrapped for the weekend, I'll be able to kick back and watch whatever.

What's your first Star Trek view gonna be??

Going with DSC. I was going to say Mirror Universe but screw it, I'll start from the beginning. Then I'll do the movies.

After that, who knows? It'll be whatever randomly pops into my head. I'm kind of worried about what DS9 and VOY will look like blown up like that, being that they're still in SD. But I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

I simply cannot believe that the writing team was so incompetent that they planned...that...the entire time, so I choose to believe it was forced on them by CBS.
Spot on. It's difficult to imagine anyone who had been taking their time to structure a smart, engaging first season arc would come up with the finale we got. I felt things started taking a back slide in the last mirror universe episode until things slipped right off the cliff in the finale.

Next season, all I ask is: do better. And I also agree with the comments re: running time. Stop trying to sprint thru a story and take the time too tell a *good* story. They've got the perfect platform and the budget to go anywhere they want with this. Here's hoping they've got the creative drama behind the scenes sorted by now...

What would have been forced on them, though? The trip to the Mirror Universe? Unless the showrunners were planning to continue the storylines into next season, I can't see how you could stick the landing once you got to those last two episodes. By then it was too late.

Personally, I think there was a lot to indicate the structural/storytelling problems existed from early on, including the odd three-part pilot, the focus on a war that wasn't and how they shelved L'Rell because they had to kill time until they needed her later. Even the finale itself seemed to look for ways to burn time that was desperately needed elsewhere.

I don't doubt there was a lot of behind-the-scenes discord that contributed to what we got, but I suspect the problems will be a lot more systemic than just an altered ending.

I guess we'll have to see what happens with the second season given all the changes going on now behind the scenes. If they have to shift where they are going again, then we may get another season that will feel discordant.

Given that a substantial part of the season had been in production (I think?) before the switch, I think there is gonna be some uneven.

Still, despite the JJTrek aspect of the show, it was still a pretty enjoyable season 1. Not TOS S1 good, but as good (or nearly) as any other Trek year one.

I do second the call for more length each episode. Harder with fewer episodes.

25 episodes at 40 min = 1,000 min
15 episodes at 60 min = 900 min

Same ballpark at least.

In terms of a hypothetical original ending, there are a lot of possibilities. Maybe the showrunners wanted something which would have taken a much higher budget to pull off. Maybe they originally planned to extend the Klingon War into the second season a bit (e.g, they hadn't figured out how to circle the square yet) and CBS came on them like a ton of bricks. Maybe their planned ending either openly broke canon, or was vetoed as too grimdark. The one thing we do know is the last 1-2 episodes were not filmed yet when the pilot aired, meaning it was the first time that CBS got real outside feedback on the series - feedback which could have changed their plans. Particularly because the "new Klingons" were the most heavily panned element of the pilot, and the idea of extending Klingon-heavy content into Season 2 might have freaked CBS out.

I agree there were structural issues with the show all the way through, most of which boiled down to writing. But they didn't have the weirdly slapdash, perfunctory feeling the end of the season finale had. Basically the whole "rah rah Starfleet bland optimism about the human condition" came out of nowhere. Then they set up the final scene to essentially say "okay, we admit that was all shit - just forget about it - but look, here's the Enterprise!" It really looked like to me someone had sat Berg/Harberts down and told them they had made a total mess of the season, and demanded they do a 180 and start the second season with an almost clean slate.

Half the season was finished filming by the time of the firings, so the season was most likely already fully written.

So we probably won’t notice anything on our end, probably.

Half of the last season of House of Cards was finished before the election, but reportedly the second half was tweaked to take that into account.

In the case of House of Cards, I don't watch it, but they probably had to adjust some things because of what happened in Current Events. Nothing they could do about that.

In Discovery, I see changes being made more out of creative choices than something that has to change due to circumstances in the news. They've been smart enough to avoid making references to politics in the Early-21st Century.

I referred to a show that was half-finished when circumstances led to changes in the story being made only to suggest that DSC might not be as locked in as it seems. I should hope that DSC will not resort to early 21st century doings for its grist. ;)

I’d love to see a time travel episode where the disco crew is trapped in the past and interacts with a much older nx01 crew. Or maybe give us a T’Pol cameo! I could see her and Michael having an interesting talk about Vulcan/human relations as well as michaels situation with Sarek.

The first season of STD was a complete turd from start to finish, mostly, with a few highlights of actual thought being put into the production here and there. Not too surprising, given the 25 producers in charge. Will the next season be worth watching? I kind of doubt it.

Most of those 25 weren't "in change". That'a not how it works.

I kind of want to see this now.

Of course only me and probably five other people would want to see a Star Trek Prison Show. But I don't care. I need to get my kicks in somehow between seasons of Orange Is the New Black. ;)
