Spoilers General Disco Chat Thread

If she's on S1, the reaction is odd. I thought during Season 1, Tilly was a character people liked, even if they didn't like the show. Lorca too, for different reasons. That was my takeaway from the reception.

During S2, it seems like the reaction was, to sing to the tune of the Eisenhower jingle (see below): "I like Pike, you like Pike, everybody likes Pike." And then that they didn't like Tilly as much because they exaggerated everything people liked about her in the first season.

Where I stand: I like Tilly in both seasons. They kind of overdid her in the early episodes of the second season, but least why made sense. Once it made sense, I was okay with it. Lorca's awesome. His shitty last appearance, and the way he went out, wasn't enough to tarnish my overall impression.

I like Pike too. Great Captain. But, unlike some others, I don't think "He made the show!" I think people who were only watching for Pike missed out on a lot of the other characters. Pike is good but he's not "so much better!" I think that's TOS and "Cage" Nostalgia speaking.

I like Tilly even more in Season 2. I think they developed her nicely and that makes sense: in Season 1 she was a shy cadet fresh out of the academy. In Season 2 she's gained more assurance and becomes more expressive. I like when things make sense.

And as I've looked at her Tillyisms in this season, I always think of how she herself admitted she starts rambling if she's nervous. So her behavior in Season 2 makes perfect sense even in that regard: she's opening up much more and doesn't hide who she is anymore, but she still gets hella nervous if she says something weird or embarrassing, and starts rambling even more. So now the next step for her is to slowly learn to accept this in herself and not be embarrassed by her own awkward quips, just simply letting them slide. She'd become much more confident and act much more at ease around others in time, without having to suppress who she is.

Come to think of it, I'm beginning to feel that the "say less words" advice from Stamets is actually bad advice for her at this point... if her problem is mainly one of confidence, it would just cause her to be even more self-conscious of catching herself with her foot in her mouth.

I love Tilly, probably more than anything else about this series. I found her sadly a bit wasted and unevenly written in season 2, but I still loved her.

If you look back at last season's discussion threads, though, you'll see she had plenty of haters from day one. She was probably the most controversial character on the show in terms of general reception. Or second most controversial after Michael.

I love controversial characters, not being a borg I tend to detest consensus. Plus there are people who hated Disco even before episode one! I guess they were ready to hate any character in it.

God, this just reminded me how I literally joined the site when something snapped me after reading Volume 47 of the "is Tilly a Mary Sue?" discussion at one of the episode threads rapidly degenerate into full-on body shaming and name-calling that went on for several episodes. What I've read from her detractors this year is downright tame compared to last year's vitriol. Which is weird considering how many people say she's been turned up to eleven in Season 2.

I'm not a character on a show.

Tilly is not what I'd call a Mary Sue, that not why I don't like her. Quite the opposite she's sort of like how people thought of Neelix. The comic relief but rather than funny it's like she's trying too hard to be wacky and quirky. Except it makes you cringe.

I remember the heady days of the first season when the Discovery was entirely crewed by psychopaths.:wtf:

Well, to be fair, they were handpicked by Mirror!Lorca... he just wanted to feel at home, obviously

I still crack up whenever I imagine what his reaction might have been when he expected The Witch of Wurna Minor and Cadet Foot-in-Mouth Tilly walked into his ready room instead.
