General Computer Thread

Ok this is pissing me off. Since yesterday I haven't been able to access my router page at all. Pinged it via CMD along with Tracert'd it and both came up clean. But the page itself will not load on either IE or on Google Chrome.

This is beyond frustrating as I go to it when I need to check on IP addresses and to make sure that there isn't anything that I need to block via my laptop's firewall.

What information do you need?

For example using nslookup from the command line will allow you to find the host name associated with a given IP address.

If you can't access the configuration page of your router, I would do a restart on it - it's possible the http stack/application has crashed.

I just go into the area that lets me view IP traffic.

Thanks!

Could be. I'm wondering now when Directv/AT&T turned things off on my end for a bit there, if that might have affected things. It's the only thing I can think of.

Hoping a reboot solves it. (Considering it takes an hour for things on Directv's end to get started (in terms of tv, it doesn't take that long to reboot the internet since it still goes through AT&T). Ugh I miss Uverse. It didn't take nearly as long to reboot. Only around 8 minutes.)

@Santaman Thanks! :)

Would be surprised if it was something they turned off given usually there would be no real requirment for them to do so (assuming the device supported that option).

In future forget the tech support until you've done a reboot of the device - 9 times out of 10 that till be their first piece of advice.

The person who designed that stupid internal USB 3.0 connector and plug should be kicked in the balls, it indeed never seems to hang on tight enough, better would have been an enlarged version of the USB 2 internal connector etc..

Yes whoever designed that little jobby needs a kick in the balls.

Try Microsoft Edge..... I had similar issue for a couple of days with Firefox and tried Edge and it logged into my router. Might work for you too.

That's what I went through after trying via Chrome and it didn't work either. Wished it did though.

It was a shutdown due to them not accepting UVerse hardware via UPS (AT&T owns Directv, but the dear UPS guy kept on turning it down saying that they don't take things from Directv even though it's stuff that we had to return from AT&T)... then billing got screwed up on their end. It's ok now, but now onto rebooting the router from their screw up.

I'm having my own odd PC problems.

Bought a refurbed box nearly 2 years ago, gradually set it to all my preferred options so it did exactly what I wanted. Runs Win7, Core2 Duo with 8Gb RAM. Again, running smooth as.

Went away for a week, and shut it down. Started it up, and straight away there were problems. They boiled down to:
Desktop Window Manager constantly crashing. Which means open drives/folders lost from explorer, apparently
Also, FireFox constantly crashing. When I've never had that kind of problem before. Like, every 10 min. Graphics heavy things seemed to cause problems, like YT. And for the first time ever VLC completely dropped sound while playing a video, and once completely crashed.

Tried several things with no result. Ended up going for a system restore point from about a month ago. Didn't help... much. I just had a feeling this was the answer, and went for a restore point from February. At the same time I upgraded FFox from 47 to current (58?). And Java didn't work at first, and for some reason I went with an earlier version, remembering that I did an upgrade on Sunday.

And so far... running mostly smooth. The only hiccup is occasionally tabs crash in FFox, but not the whole browser.

So, has anyone heard of problems with the latest Java update? I had a quick look online but couldn't see anything. The trick definitely seems to have been upgrading FF and downgrading Java, but I have no idea why. Thoughts?

So they shut down the web management interface on your router but not your internet connection?

Yea it looks that way. Parts of the web worked. Some sites didn't. Now it's good web wise... but not so the router. They also shut down the tv so only junk came in. Now that's ok too. Only the router is left that needs to be rebooted.

Ok guys, ran into this one before. Where my start button would act up and I couldn't view stuff on it. They'd show up blank.

It happened again today. I hate Windows 10.

And via Chrome (Tumblr)... Ok… now I can’t get audio posts to work. The play button does not load.

Ok this is stupid. I checked my feed and saw that the play button is there… but when I try to access it via my archive and go to the page, it’s not there.

How I got it to work again (like before):

Okkay, now I’m creeped out. Ran into disappearing buttons on my laptop via the sound adjustment and the start button. Restarting it seems to have helped and now the music buttons are back on the music.

Thinking it could be a Windows 10 bug and maybe an issue with my virtual Ram.

I'm frustrated as I read just recently that some companies are sauntering the ram chip into the motherboard. I'm hoping that the one I have isn't one of them as I don't have the dough to replace that let alone just the ram at this point.

Another reason why I think it's ram related... Tumblr runs a bit hard on it and so does Chrome alone. They're both ram hogs. Maybe it reached the point where it corrupted the music area and then it messed up my laptop.

The reboot seemed to fix it, but it's only a temp one.

Okay firstly virtual memory aka swap is simply a chunk of space on your hard disk. Unless there's a problem with your hard disk or your swapfile is too small you don't have problems with.

Secondly download a program call memtest86, start it running a full test and then leave the computer alone for a few hours. It will take some time to run

Third a problem with chrome does not equate to a problem with Windows 10. Google has just released a new version of Chrome (v62 came out on Tuesday). Check your version to see if it's updated and if so whether you can roll back. Check other updates (there was a Java update this week). If you can in Add/Remove Programs (can also find it as Apps and Defauilts) and sort by date you can see what programs have updated on your computer recently.

The memory is running fine. It's a bit low, but that's due to be being a smaller drive.

I'll check that as well.

Been keeping an eye on the virtual ram via the task manager and any time when I ran into freezes and what not it runs around the high 60's to 70's.

I only have 4GB DDR3 Memory installed... so I figure since Google and Tumblr are a bit intensive there, it might have caused some of the issue.

I ran into issues with disappearing icons before with Windows, so that's why I thought it was in part due to a bug.

icons disappearing has been an issue with windows long before Windows 10 came long.

there's a fuckton of code from previous Windows versions still in Win10 so often bugs will carry on to the next version.

I can remember some-one I used to work with developed an account system that tied in with MS Office products complaining that there was still a bug with Word a decade and 3 versions after Microsoft became aware of it.

Yea I ran into that one with 7 as well. Had to use a code to get icons back to normal.

What happened in Chrome today with the disappearing icon was weird to say the least. It's a first. O_o Thankfully it's only happened that one time.

What machine do you use? Give me the whole name and type number, type of processor, graphicscard etc etc, the whole thing, did it come with Windows 10? Was it updated from 7? Some machines are just recalcitrant and won't work well with some OS's, I have one that doesn't like Linux, runs great on Windows 7 but on Linux it needs a whack with a hammer now and then.

Also, did you upgrade to the latest version of M$ crapware?

Probably a chipset/North bridge graphics card issue, it's a Phenom II 905e machine with a AMD 780G chipset the graphics card of that is a Radeon 3200, there's something going on with that graphics chip, Kernel 4.4.0-xx runs okay although now and then it is slow to boot, if I try 4.8.0-xx it won't boot but will be stuck at a black screen with a blinking cursor, same with 4.11.0.xx and this doesn't change with updating the graphics driver.
Now I do know that those older chipsets can be fuzzy with Linux, so far I just have to stay at 4.4.0.xx fot it to cause the least troubles.

I also have a Sempron 145 machine with a 760G and that one can run the later kernels..
