General Computer Thread

I AM SQUEALING WITH EXCITEMENT.

I rang the local office of Thermaltake here in Australia, they had several of the cases brand new in boxes and I got one. Less then half of what I was going to pay online. 3 days delivery........ So happy.

No, its annoying but it doesn't damage the equipment, its part of how stuff works, it can be influenced by designing your circuit carefully but in some cases can't be avoided totally.

Oh that's an interesting phenomena.... Thanks for the links

I'm on a 23 inch screen now from the 19 I had before and it's made a world of difference. Things are a lot easier to see on here. I had the same issue when the screen changed but doing a ctrl and using the mouse wheel made everything bigger and fit more and for me it's made a ton of difference with page browsing and reading in general.

That doesn't work so well when you get into high DPI because the web just isn't designed for it and webpage just look plain odd. a 1440p has about 78% more pixels than a 1080p one.

Windows is getting better than handling it as are some apps but websites will remain a mess for a while...

Sorry to sound dense but 1440p???? 1080p??

I assume that's what I have as my screen is 1920x1080

The issue is that although you get fonts bigger as default in chrome, many sites seems to ignore this - facebook in particular is pretty small. I'll get use to it or anything problematic, I'll just drag on the 24" 1080p monitor on the right. Images of course look fantastic so do youtube videos uploaded in that format.

I've read that people use scaling to make things more readable when dealing with the higher resolution monitors but I'm not sure where the setting is located other than somewhere under display properties.

It's not increasing the font size per se more akin to zooming.

That's because Samsung wants you to buy one.

I went with the Acer 27" so only paid $199 before tax instead of 349 when I really didn't to be getting 2 brand new monitors.

Did also consider an HP IPS which would have been 30 more and looked a bit nice but stretching the budget. Plus I get the money I want a new desk and attach a montior arm - the Acer has a VESA mount, the HP didn't.

Plus the Acer warranty is 3years,. the HP 1.

Here are the settings. Just right click on the desktop if you are using Windows and choose display properties

Step 1.

Once you have done this you will get another screen with a drop down box where you can choose to adjust the fonts for almost everything on screen including menus, title bars, and icons..... So you can pretty much change everything.

I occasionally use Speccy and for the most part it is accurate but the CPU temps have never, ever been accurate. I use CPUZ for that.. But just to show you how far off it is have a look at this screencap.

You have a FX chip, those use a digital which sensor no longer reports an absolute temperature value anymore, but a reading with a certain offset, which is unknown. It is estimated that this offset is between 10 - 20c.

So 6c you see, add 10 or 20c and you should be in the ballpark.

Correct. When I go into the BIOS I get an accurate reading of 26 degrees.

That is the CPU socket temp, which is measured by a probe fitted on the mainboard just underneath the CPU socket, these are not all that accurate but its used for controlling the PWM system which sets fan speeds for the CPU cooler and case fans etc, the actual core temp, or in the case of AMD the probe fitted to the CPU die is the one you see having 6c, also, as of 45c the probe of the CPU itself will give you accurate temperature readings.

And probably the rest my i5-4590s is currently running at 43c and the AMD's are still a way behind Intel on the thermal performance.

Fired up my old Athlon X3 system for the first time 16 months. Forgot how much heat those suckers generate.

Oh yeah my BIOS lets me do screencaps........ After I posted I reset the PC and did two screencaps. This is what I got for my CPU temperature.. Both were recorded a few minutes apart but the temps were the same so posted the first one.

I've got a AMD FX 8350 which actually doesn't run that hot, I've got a Scythe Mugen 3 bolted onto it and I've never seen it go above 55c during gaming.

If you want hot then try a Prescot Pentium 4... THOSE run hot...
