General Computer Thread

in a really rare instance it also could be that the speaker is broken.
http://www.computerhope.com/jargon/s/spc.htm
Connecting the speaker to the middle two pins doesn't work, they're ground connections.

It is different on my board. On my board the two outer ones are - and + for a normal speaker and the centre pins are + - for a piezo buzzer. I suspect the buzzer is kaput as it did not run even on a battery.

I did that test a few minutes before checking in the forums here.

Ah, if its broken then it indeed will be hard to use.. they should be dirt cheap though, also, does your board have an on-board speaker? if so, usually if you jumper the middle two pins the mainboard will use that one then instead but DO read your mainboard manual first.

No onboard speaker just the pins for a connector.

I'm getting a new PC Case so that problem might be fixed.

I'm going to get the Thermaltake Level 10 GT

That is a nice case. :)

It's definitely weird..... I like weird. The version I am getting isn't the all metal version which is the same but retails at over $800 US... This version has plastic on the side panel that opens and only one metal panel on the back where the wiring all goes..

The version I am getting is just under $300

There was a nice Corsair cube case the 540 but this looks more fun.

For my main system I'm using a Antec P-183 v3 with a coolermaster drive cage which holds and extra fan so I've got 2 fans in and two fans out for the top compartiment.

Don't go to the Best Buy or Geek Squad ..... There's videos floating around where they got busted ripping people off for faults that could be fixed by changing whole parts that probably would work rather then look at the issue.

I would tell you that much like going to different ford/chevy/etc/etc dealers, Geeksquad can be the same way. Some are good.. Some are bad..

An onboard speaker looks like this, or sometimes integrated onto the board. Hardly even a real speaker.

I know that. I did post a picture of what my speaker looked like.

It's not an issue at the moment that's a dealbreaker but I just hate when things don't do what they are supposed to do and I've taken every step to make sure they do work.

I've upgraded my main monitor to a 25" 1440p - it's great for excel and the sort of office work I do on a day to day basis but the web looks awfully small! (Edge actually deals with this a lot better than chrome).

I'm on a 23 inch screen now from the 19 I had before and it's made a world of difference. Things are a lot easier to see on here. I had the same issue when the screen changed but doing a ctrl and using the mouse wheel made everything bigger and fit more and for me it's made a ton of difference with page browsing and reading in general.

Due to space constraints I am still using an older Philips Brilliance 220SW 22" screen, runs at a nice 1680x1050.
I don't see the need to replace it with something else yet.

What until January 1st. Then you can make a new monitor your New Year's resolution. </rimshot>

Are curved screens really of any benefit or gimmick? I noticed in one of the shops I frequent a lot they are really trying to hardsell the samsung curved screens as they have them for PC screens and for TVs which no one is buying.

Yea, curves screens are "great". If you like a reduced viewing angle. I never understood the idiocy of making screens curved.

Went from a 19inch CRT to 23inch (Widescreen) LCD and yeah, the difference was really noticable.

Currently running a 22" and a 19" but there's an offer on this week from Staples for 2 x Samsung 24" for $Ca349 before tax which is tempting. They are only 1920x1080 but it's not so much needing the higher resolution but the screen size will be better as my eyes get older.

Or I could go a 27" at the same resolution and donate the 19".

Find that 19 is usable as a secondary but hate it for a primary (I have as 19" on my computer that lives at my inlaws) 1440*900 is just too damn small

According to Samsung they are great, and the next big thing.

BTW does anyone here live in Australia and ordered stuff online from overseas, do you have to pay customs when goods reach a certain amount?
