General Computer Thread

Y2K was an interesting time, IBM and other biggies were asking retired programmers to come back and fix the code, no one else was able to do it, guess a lot of retired COBOL people were asked to show up.

Yeah, including an Aunt of mine. She apparently was one of the best people to do the job.

Probably that point in time the computer will be able to program themselves.

Either that or their will have been been a massive jihad and thinking machines will have been destroyed :)

Or the other way around. Which isn't a good look at all for humanity if there is one left.

If I remember correctly, the Butlerian Jihad in Dune's history was supposedly around 8-10,000 years from now (with the events in Dune about 11,000 or so later).

I tried that one, Malwarebytes is good but a little bloaty on something like a laptop, fine for a desktop but I went back to the one that was built into windows. for both machines in the end.

Hey I got my second sextortion email.

It came to an email address I don't use but I have had two of these and they were worded exactly the same.

This is the email you get most of them are worded exactly the same. The one I got however had the senders carrier information and a disclaimer from the mobile carrier they were using .. How clever?

I have had two of thoese over the last few months stating they have been watching me via a webcam that i have never owned from a virus they installed onto my machine that has never been there, both of which are a nice technical feat, but their convincer is that they have a old password that was in fact real about 8 years ago, that they use to try and seal the deal, mine seems to be from the PS3 PSN Sony hack days, so it goes to show you how much hacked and stolen email and password information from the last 10 years is still out there on the net........but just for anyone who gets one of these block and report as phishing, although you might still get some popping up in the spam folder, but these scam emails are all automated and just the same old same, only these ones have had the help of security complacent corporations like Sony, Amazon and the likes, but just another scam all the same, and some day those involved will have their collar felt by the law over these scammer extortion emails.

The one I got had the carriers info in the headers so I forwarded it to the carrier that was hosting the address.

^^^Ha.......a nice little visit from law enforcement might be not be what they expected. lol

Well honestly if you were sending out those kinds of emails would you not check to see you are not sending your actual carrier information. The address in the sender field was bogus but not the actual headers...

So, Win 10 1903 seems to be a bug fest with audio problems, patches that disable several WiFi cards, PIN login being wonky etc etc. and $pycro$oft adding yet again telemetry to Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 luckily with these OS's they can be disabled again quite easily.

Holy cow. Microsoft is at it again. Glad I've been able to block the updates.

It'll be awhile before I can use my laptop again though. It's been down for the count... gotta get it in for its yearly check up and fan cleaning.

I am using 1903 now I just did it on a whim and did the update but so far no real issues that I have not been able to fix on my own. Some games have gotten a tiny bit glitchy but they were like that under the previous build too, however some of my game cheats don't work as expected so that has cheesed me off.

I just noticed an interesting thing that just happened right now, mainly because I never do this particular thing. I had to run to the loo and forgot to close my optical drive, had a DVD in it. So anyway I come back a minute or two later and find the drive closed, so figured it must have closed by itself so I opened it again and timed it, sure enough after about 60 seconds the drive closes by itself. Interesting, I thought once open they stay open.

^^It's a new feature in W10 to stop birds nesting in the open drive shelf, but best to close Windows when you are not at the PC, that wat they won't get into the house. :nyah:

Haha I love this post.

Seriously is there a timer or something that controls that? Is there a way of resetting that timer or changing it?
