General Computer Thread

some of the posters who responded to the article on anandtech did wonder about the convenience of it though some of them brought up the flooding that screwed up HDD production a few years back.

Before Windows 95 there was was a big spike in ram prices are few years prior that pretty much killed off OS/2.

OS/2 Warp ran okay with 4MB ram, IBM's poor marketing was the problem for OS/2 if they had been better at it OS/2 might have done better.
I Used to have a DX2 -50Mhz with 4MB RAM that ran OS/2 Warp, worked quite well. :mallory:

Earlier versions had heavier ram requirements (thinking 1.x and 2.0 the later beating Windows to 32bit by 3 years).

Played around with OS/2 2.0 but can't recall if I ever run Warp.

I still have the install CD and so on, might try it again someday although hardware that can run it would be pretty rare by now...

Warp was nice, quite fast, incredibly stable and it looked good.

That's the one. That was a weekly staple in our house in the dark days before the internet. Used to laugh at the intro theme because it showed a glorious shiny future that never happened.

I remember that show. We used to get it in Canada via the Discovery Channel, and as far as I know, it's the show that Mythbusters was spun off from. I think there was also another spin-off show that didn't last very long.

Not quite.

Beyond 2000 started on the 7 network in Australia and followed from a braindead decision by the Australian ABC to shit can a very popular program called Towards 2000.

Sadly over time the very good on-air talent moved on the program fell victim to being on a commercial network with a decline in quality.

In the later years they would include clips from Mythbusters (which at the time was airing on another public broadcast station in Australia).

The production company was Beyond Ltd who would go on to produce a wide range of programs that included Mythbusters (some of the Beyond production staff came from down-under leading to the odd off camera Australian accent on Mythbusters).

Lots of retrotreasure. :biggrin::mallory:

They’re certainly adware and spyware.

There's this, that helps with Windows 10 somewhat.
https://www.oo-software.com/en/shutup10

O&O ShutUp10 means you have full control over which comfort functions under Windows 10 you wish to use, and you decide when the passing on of your data goes too far. Using a very simple interface, you decide how Windows 10 should respect your privacy by deciding which unwanted functions should be deactivated.

O&O ShutUp10 is entirely free and does not have to be installed – it can be simply run directly and immediately on your PC. And it will not install or download retrospectively unwanted or unnecessary software, like so many other programs do these days!

2023 will be a sad year.. that is when support stops for the last decent Windows (8.1) after that you either use Linux, BSD or something else not made by M$, Apple etc or become become their alpha tester and test bitch.. :p

That makes me feel sad. With the place being so run-down and on the verge of closing, there's probably not going to be a hell of a lot that can be done to save all that stuff, at least in terms of the warehouse. Someone could probably make a decent bit of money keeping the warehouse open, tidying it up and running it as a retro parts depot. Ahh, I dunno. There's not terribly much that could be done. I think it'd take too much effort to sort it all. There might be lots of hidden treasure there, but there's just as much useless crap to wade through.

I've got many old machines myself, at the moment they're safe, if things would go south for some reason they all would probably be destroyed/recycled.

If I were a billionair I'd make a one chip XT clone in a small but sturdy enclosure with DOS in ROM with a USB controller so you can put stuff on a USB stick and run it of there, probably would create a 286, 386 and 486 version too, I would add the classic soundblaster and VGA support. :mallory:

You know given the huge size of gate arrays and ULA chips I'm surprised no one has actually gone and done that very thing. Nostalgia marketing seems to work.

I'll ask IBM about it... no idea if they would take it serious but still, a machine like that can be made into a very tiny little system on a chip, probably smaller than a Raspberry Pi, I wonder if IBM still has the rights to produce the Cyrix 6x86 chips, those were marvelous.. a machine based on one of those could run about every nostalgic piece of software there is. :mallory:

I wish the Woz would come here. he should support these ideas. Buy that old warehouse out and a larger dead-mal to house it all in with proper shelves--run a server farm out of it so that--even if the foot traffic were llow-the property itself would make money--with a cell tower and some dishes also supporting things. Put a star trek set for lazer tag--and the whole dead mall becomes self supporting.
