Geez I just can't help it... Seven in the catsuit...

Not to mention, VOY had a history of puttin' its characters into uniform. The Doctor didn't attend the Academy, but his program included the uniform. Kes & Tom's daughter in 'Before & After' had a blue uniform, despite the ship still headin' for Earth. Neelix was also shown in a security uniform. Torres didn't graduate from the Academy, but still got a uniform and a rank. Tom was straight out of prison, but got to wear a uniform in the position of "observer" in 'Caretaker'.

If Seven hadn't "needed" the skin tight catsuit for "dermal healin'" or whatever reason it was the Doctor gave in 'The Gift', she could easily have been put into a blue sciences uniform, no rank necessary.
The EMH is the Medical Academy. Tom & Be'Lanna like Chakotay all attended the Academy. Tom's was a field commission, so once they got to Earth he'd loose his rank. Be'lanna got her rank due to her skill and intergration purposes. Neelix as far as I remember was given rank due to emergency circumstances. Linnis doesn't exist. :p

Seven had an impressive technical skill, volumnious knowledge (including much Starfleet procotols - even classified ones like the Omega Directive) and pretty much took over Astrometrics. She was overqualified for a field comission of any rank.

But if she'd got a rank, she'd no longer be an outsider. Piller kind of admitted this once, noting that a problem with the Maquis is they all donned the SF uniforms, but Seven not doing so - aside from the obvious reasons regarding her alternate attire - kept her apart dramatically.

Exactly.

No matter how much of her humanity she got back, she would still see herself and be seen by others as Borg. It was a cross she had to bare.

I came (literally and figuratively) for Jeri in the silver catsuit and stayed for the Doctor and Seven stories.

I have to admit I liked it, but honestly, for the purposes of Star Trek as a whole, I really wish she had ditched the Borg name 'Seven', gone back to Annika, and donned a uniform with a provisional rank of Ensign. Especially after discovering her borgified father on the cube. That's a condensed version of what her 4th/5th season character arc should have been.

Why Ensign? She had all the knowledge about Starfleet and Starfleet protocols as a Captain, at least!

It's like asking Bill Gates to be the office junior at Microsoft.

While I disagree with the Bill Gates thing, I am thinkin' that Seven's knowledge is part of the reason why she shouldn't have a rank. Tom didn't have any pips on his collar when he first came aboard, so that's the example I'm goin' with. Seven didn't really "take" orders, and she rarely asked permission from those "superior" to her - she just did her own thing in her own part of the ship and contacted the others when necessary.

I think just puttin' her in the blue science uniform would have been enough - ranks were little more than formality by the time the series got into its sixth season, anyway.

I know it's not a perfect analogy, it was the best I could think of at the time.

With half the crew being non-Starfleet Marquis people, I see your point. (Tell that to Ensign Kim, though...)

In light of the facts in your first paragraph, why bother putting her in a uniform? Seems pretty superfluous to me.

I don't get why a uniform that doesn't show off her figure is sexier than one that does or why conforming appeals to Trek fans here more than being unique?

"Hey honey, I think you look sexier with more clothes on." :wtf:
