Garak and Kirk Similarities:

Praxius

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
I was watching last night episodes "Improbable Cause" and "The Die is Cast" (Been a while since I seen them) and one of the things that came to mind in those episodes was just how well Garak and Odo mesh with their personalities.... opposites yet still similar in some ways.

But this thread isn't exactly about that. One thing I noticed while watch Garak do his normal talking routine is that he has a very strong Kirk (Shatner) style of talking.

raising his voice for certain words or points.... pausing a few times in a sentence before completing it...... this isn't something that Kirk did a lot of, but when he was in a bind, stressed or angry over something, the pauses and random changes of tone in his voice did occur, similar to what I see in Garak.

I was wondering if anybody else ever noticed these similarities and/or if there was ever some known connection to the two character styles.

You know, I can't say that I ever saw that, and looking back, I still don't see it. I recently started rewatching DS9 (for the first time since the initial TV run ended), so maybe I'll see something the second time around that I missed the first time, but my impression is that Andrew Robinson has a much more naturalistic acting style than Shatner does, and that although Garak tends to speak in a formal style quite often, that isn't enough, or even close to enough, to make it seem very Kirkian to me.

I don't agree. The main similarity is that they both tend to pause a lot, but with Garak the pauses come much more natural then with Kirk.

I don't think their speech patterns are similar at all, no more than anything else about them.

I think my relations I saw had more to do with the pausing and emphasizing of certain words in their sentences that they want to make sure gets understood well.

Their personalities are of course much different, but sometimes how they talk seem almost identical at times. I'll have to dig up episodes to compare with to show what I mean...... but out of all of the other Star Trek Characters, I felt their method of communication to be similar in some aspects.

And yes, Kirk/Shatner didn't do the pausing and emphasizing as much as Garak did, but it was still there imo.

I don't see it, myself, but it has been my experience that different people hear things differently.
