Okay...though it was a great battle, the Lanterns seem to have beaten the Jedi...though, my Jedi friends, you fought a good fight....

So...I give you this fight...YODA, in his prime VS Gandalf in his prime...

(Dont worry MOD, this is only the second fight I have done like this and the LANTERN / JEDI fight went on for a week so you can close that thread if you wish)...

So..once again..YODA, in his prime VS Gandalf (Token's legendary character)

I imagine a burning, flailing Yoda doing a couple spins before he collapses. I guess it comes down to what Gandalf you are talking about. Is it Gandalf the White or the Grey. Is he movie Gandalf? Gandalf in the movie didn't do too much magic. Does Glamdring or Gandalf's staff have any magical defense against a lightsaber?

Hmmmm..getting all technical on me...NOT FAIR!!!...I'll go with the movie Gandalf and movie Yoda...

Rob

But which movie Gandalf- Gandalf the Grey (FOTR & early part of TT) or the White (last half of TT and ROTK) or do you refer to Gandalf in the animated film?

Gandalf.

Without overanalysing, I'll just refer to The Encyclopaedia of Arda's characterisation of Gandalf's potential kickassability.

Scroll down to "The Magic of Gandalf", particularly:

"Tolkien at no point defines what the limits of Gandalf's magic were. As a Maia, he had many natural abilities that would seem magical to mortal races, but he also had a great store of knowledge of more 'mechanical' magic, worked through spells and incantations, and especially through the agency of his staff. It is clear that he had far greater power, especially after his return as Gandalf the White, than he ever displayed in Middle-earth.

Yoda is a powerful Jedi Master, but he's still just a mortal creature. Gandalf is of a race of beings analogous to the angels, with vast powers and abilities.

Gandalf wins. Even as Gandalf the Grey.

Also, Gandalf "in his prime" would be Olórin, his true form/persona who would be unencumbered by the limited human body in which Gandalf resided. Yoda's screwed no matter what.

Since I have no idea what you are talking about I'll agree with what you're talking about...kind of like Stephen Hawkin talking..just roll with it is what I do...

Yeah, sorry. My two biggest areas of geekitude are Star Wars and Middle-earth. I know way too much about both. :o

Gotta go with Gandalf.

Movie Yoda's not even a puppet anymore; he's mere CGI.
Movie Gandalf is Ian Mckellan, FFS. Plus, he's died and come back in physical form, where Yoda is just a ghost.

I think in the book, when Gandalf "smote the Balrogs ruin on the mountainside", he also broke part of the mountain. Does anybody remember that bit? What did it say exactly? It certainly sounds pretty devastating.

Gandalf's powers as seen in the movies seemed somewhat inconsistant. Sometimes it seemed as if his human form was very stiff and fragile, much like a real human, and other times he was like frickin Superman, as with his Balrog fight. I guess it depends on how much strength he summons, much like Yoda. Yoda usually walks with a cane, but when he summons his force strength he really moves.

I think Yoda would have the better attack, and Gandalf would have the better defense. Gandalf has the magic light bubble.

I cant even believe this is even being debated...Yoda's ally is the force.

Nuff said

besides gandalf was looking pretty scared when the witch king knocked him off his horse (literally) and broke his magic staff....then a mere mortal woman was able to kill him(witch king).

ligthsaber vs magic staff..lightsaber wins i think but it's debatable

w/o the staff yoda wins hands down even w/o his lightsaber

Oh that's an invention of the movies; the idea was that they shorted the Witch-King's screentime, so in the Extended Cut, they tried hard to re-emphasize how strong the Lord of the Nazgul is, to the point of nearly overpowering Gandalf....this was very controversial, as the books deliberately leave it ambiguous who would win in a fight; Gandalf faces down the Lord of the Nazgul at the gates of Minas Tirith, *just as* the Rohirrim arrive, so The WiKi leaves to counter their advance just as he's in the middle of sizing up Gandalf.

Yoda is, despite all his power, a mortal....he literally dies of old age.

Gandalf is essentially an Angel that has descended into human form for the sake of interacting with us.

Now, Gandalf has *major* restrictions on the USE of his powers, that Yoda technically does not have....obviously, he is restrained from fighting in anger, he doesn't like using force lightening (just redirecting it) etc. etc.

but again: Yoda is just a "person", albeit a really enlightened one. Gandalf isn't really the same as us, though he does like us.

Gandalf was a Maiar, he helped create middle earth.
all yoda did was create a mess in his pants

gandalf wins hands down. even in his diminished form of gandalf.
