I know it's about four or five months out before the next season gets rolling, but I'm really getting excited about what might be happening this coming year.
Non-book readers here on the BBS (John P - looking at you bro!
) will rejoice that, aside from the (IMO) somewhat anemic Ironborne arc, all this will be new to everyone, as the next book (Winds of Winter) hasn't been released yet. I'm particularly looking forward to being surprised as to what happens next.
The biggest question that really shouldn't even be a spoiler or surprise at this point is, what is the fate of Jon Snow? I'm still putting it in spoiler code here for those who have been either in deep freeze or doing hard time for the past several years.
Last season, in the crypts of Winterfell, we saw a glimpse of what came before in the actions made by certain players during Robert's Rebellion in the form of a conversation between Littlefinger and Sansa.
What are the White Walkers and what are their goals?
Lots of other questions are out there in addition to these, but those are the ones that I think orbit around one of the major story arcs.
And Deanerys? Eh...she needs to stop fiddling about in the wastelands north of Meereen and get on with her conquest of Westeros. She's been delayed a bit too long, IMO, and her current story is kind of boring me. I'm glad that Tyrion got to her sooner than I would have thought, but now that they're separated again, I'm not expecting much there for a while, sadly.
Anyone heard news on the release of the new book? It's been dead silent on many fronts, with very little coming out of GRRM's mouth lately.

For months, we've seen photos of Kit Harrington hanging out at local pubs with the rest of the known-filming cast. He's been seen in costume wearing what appears to be potentially Stark clothing and colors (although we're unsure if it's a flashback or not). Melisandre returned to Castle Black just in time for the finale before Jon's assassination by the Night's Watch so that she can be conveniently on hand to resurrect him with R'hllor's Red Power. Will Jon be Azor Ahai reborn? A fair bet says the answer will be "yes".
There is an implication of the long-held assumption that Lyanna Stark, Ned's sister, was not "kidnapped" by Rhaegar Targaryen as Robert Baratheon assumed (being the primary cause for his "Rebellion"), but taken secretly as a wife, and producing Jon Snow as their true heir. Casting calls seem to indicate flashbacks containing potential young versions of Ned and Lyanna Stark and Robert Baratheon. I think we're finally going to see much of what happened that caused all the rest of what we've already seen come to pass. About bloody time! Way may even see Sean Bean return to reprise his role for the older Ned.
This one is more mysterious and a bit of a noodle-scratcher. Jon's confrontation with one of the "kings" of the Walkers shows more than just a blind and unintelligent zombie leader, but one of cunning, potentially high intellect and maybe even a smidge of an almost Tump-like bravado and ego when he stared down Jon during the big escape from Hard Home. It felt like he was wordlessly challenging Jon, with a distinctly "whatchya gonna do about it, gangsta?" air about him. What are their goals? Are they out for the complete domination and/or destruction of all humankind (plus Children of the Forest and Giants)?
What did they need with Craster's children, or are the "kings" of the Walkers those same man-children after some kind of magically-accelerated growth has occurred?
To get a bit meta, here, this is GRRM's world - a world where its author enjoys taking Tolkien-like fantasy tropes and knock them on their ass. Will we realize at some point that the "good guys" all along were, in fact, the Walkers and that maybe the Children of the Forest were secretly planning the downfall of humanity for destroying the continent of Westeros that they once possessed for themselves? Are the Walkers merely cog of a bigger machine, with the Children of the Forest as their true masters, and with the Three Eyed Crow pulling all the strings?
Anyone who's invested any time in this world will know that stranger things have happened, nothing is sacred and literally anything is possible.
