Full Circle Partial Prologue on Amazon (Spoilers)

Let's just say, I don't think "grieving Chakotay" will hang around much past FC. And even if he spents FC in "grief mode," if you've ever lost someone you care about, you know it's not something you can just "get over." He'll be a sad-sack in this book, and hopefully move on by Unworthy.

Weren't we told that Chakotay would not be the captain of the Voyager in Unworthy on account of being grief-stricken over Janeway? Sounds like emo Chakotay might have a greater lifespan than you might expect. (Not that there isn't precedant: according to "Endgame", Chakotay never recovered from the heartbreak of losing Seven in the original timeline.)

where'd you hear/read that about chakotay in unworthy? but, that's a good pickup about his emotional state after losing someone he cares that much about.

I think it was in one of the interviews Margaret Clark gave. I don't recall the exact wording at all, but paraphrasing loosely it ran along of the lines of: "Who will Voyager's captain be? We'll only say not Chakotay, as he's still in mourning following the events of Before Dishonor."

That said, I have no idea if that indicates it is merely the situation going into Unworthy, and resolving at some point during the book, or if that persists for the duration of the novel.

I've been looking forward to Full Circle, but for some reason that preview turned me off a tad. The thought of Chakotay pining over Janeway all those years makes him look like a putz, IMO. It seems like he'll still be defined in terms of his relationship to Janeway instead of evolving as a character in his own right. I'll still read the book (I've had it pre-ordered for some time), but I'm not looking forward to it as much as I once was. I sure hope my assumptions are wrong.

I understand where you're coming from, but, to be honest, Chakotay looked like a putz, period. He was never really "defined" to begin with. Throughout the series, his character never truly evolved, and the lousy handling of the J/C aspect was only one part of the issue. However, in regards to that issue, the original plan was to put Janeway and Chakotay together, but after Jeri Taylor left, it was dropped. The original "will they/won't they" J/C moments created a buttload of fans, who were subsequently ticked-off by both the innattention the writers paid the pairing, and that stupid C/7 nonsense.

It left things in limbo. At least it looks like FC will finally address the issue and resolve it once and for all. I'm really hoping this is an opportunity for Chakotay to finally start moving forward.

On a personal note, I get rather tired of constant fan complaints, fights, and wars over romantic entanglements. Ultimately, I think there are more interesting things in 'Trek then who's sleeping with who.
i agree with most of what you said, but i always thought they put the J/C debate to rest with the "resolutions" episode. i've read that jeri taylor really pushed the P/T romance, but not so much the J/C romance.

Actually J/C was still somewhat hinted on Season 3, not to mention that little talk they had in the ready room in Hunters (Season 4), which was then deleted from the episode.

I don't know whose idea ditching J/C ultimately was, but I know that Mulgrew didin't want it to happen.

i know that people mention that exchange in her ready room from some promo during season 4, but i'm suspect about that b/c only one line from janeway is spoken in that promo. anyway, i didn't see any of which you speak during season 3 but you did remind me at how often they did have quiet candlelit dinners in her quarters during seasons 6 and 7. so maybe there was something there after all.

It was from this TrekMovie.com preview. The exact quote is:
One thing that Clark would not say is who is the captain, but she did reveal that it was not Chakotay who is "dealing with having his soul ripped out" due to the "apparent death of Kathryn Janeway"

Interesting.

With Tuvok on the Titan, and not really being able to see Harry getting catapulted from eternal Ensign to the centre seat, I'd guess it has to be Tom, B'Elanna, or somebody new brought in

^tuvok is on the titan?? when did that happen? last we read in the VOY novels he was an aide to janeway. if he is on the titan, that wouldn't preclude him from returning to voyager since he's not captain of the titan. it would be a promotion for him. i can't see tom or harry getting promoted to the chair quite yet. we'll have to wait and see what role b'elanna takes in FC but i don't see her getting promoted to the captaincy if tom or harry wouldn't get it.

^but, i don't think tuvok was on the titan during the destiny trilogy. so either way he could still be promoted to captain of VOY for unworthy.

^No, Tuvok was on Titan during Destiny, and is still there in the same post-Destiny timeframe as the new Voyager books, so he won't be the new captain in Unworthy.

Unless, I suppose, the next Titan book doesn't have him. But I'd think he'll still be there

^Never mind the ~next~ Titan book, Over a Torrent Sea has him still on Titan fully six months after the events of Destiny. However wrecked Voyager was after the events in the Azure Nebula, I can't imagine it would take that long to repair the ship and pick a new captain.

Those novels were set in 2378. The Titan series begins at the end of 2379 and continues through 2380-81. In the first Titan novel, Tuvok was seen working undercover for Starfleet Intelligence on Romulus; he was captured and rescued by Titan's crew, and then went on to become Titan's tactical officer.

if he is on the titan, that wouldn't preclude him from returning to voyager since he's not captain of the titan.

Not in time for Full Circle, though. Most of Over a Torrent Sea, the latest Titan novel, takes place after Full Circle, and Tuvok is still aboard Titan at that time. And since the ship is a good distance away from Federation space and getting farther, crew transfers aren't exactly practical.

IMO, i believe her battle with braga to bring the P/T romance to fruition was part of the reason she left. braga, it's been said, wanted a P/7 romance but didn't get it. he eventually got it with the trip/t'pol pairing though. but, that's why he was on record as saying the P/T pairing was barely touched upon during the 5th and 6th seasons.
I also considered the J/C thing to be over in "Resolutions", which is one of the reasons I don't like the idea of Chakotay carrying a torch Janeway years later. I realize the prologue builds from the Distant Shores story Isabo's Shirt, but I had a hard time buying that as well (the story was well-written, but it wasn't my cup of tea). I'm not that into the shipper stuff, but I would have preferred it if the Chakotay/Seven relationship was continued (which is apparently not a popular opinion).

Anyway, I've looked through a few more pages at Amazon, and that has me once again really looking forward to reading the whole novel.
