Friendship Outside of the BBS

*hugs Smurfie*

On topic: there are some people here that I consider to be friends. They know who they are. ;)

Just wanted to comment myself on the little conversation that has been going on in my absence. Mr Laser Beam wasn't creepy or stalker-y at all when he saw me playing Scrabble. The little event occurred exactly as he said it did.

Besides, how could he not have noticed me? My awesomeness is detectable from space.

And I was wearing a sequins hat.

Great thread. Just sorry it took me so long to work my way through it.

Much to my dismay, I have only met one TBBS poster in IRL, and we had a great conversation over beers and burgers. But, there are a BUNCH of people on here I'd really like to meet.

As others have said, I'm pretty much the same here as I am in "the world" and, while I completely understand and respect those people who prefer to keep their on-line and "real" lives separate, I'm just the reverse. I enjoy coming here because of the many, many things I share in common with so many of you, and would love to explore those things further in real life social situations. Oddly enough, meeting many of you on FaceBook has only pointed this up all the more. I mean, when you come to a Trek BBS you KNOW there are certain things you will have in common. But, getting to know some of you in a more broad sense there has demonstrated that many of us have even MORE things generally in common. But, I'm also the kind of person who likes to get to know people who have different intersts, as well.

Okay, I'm rambling. The short version is, I'd love to participate in real life meet-ups. I'd love to meet all my FB TBBS friends (Randi, Astro - and his iHusband -, Adm_Hawthorne, Sidious, JonathanWally ... even Shameless :p.) In addition, the local Boston/MA contingent: RJDiogenes, Spocked, SmoothieX, did I forget anyone? Probably.

And a bunch of others (who I have to make a note to stalk on FB.)

And in no particular order ...,

There are a few people I wouldn't be opposed to meeting, but I really would prefer not to hang out with anyone here.

This makes baby TrekkieMonster cry. :( :p

I met JonathanWally for the first time in front of a porn shop near Penn Station. True story.

Now, THAT is a great meet-up story! :bolian:

So ..., when are we all getting together? And where?

Give us a heads up whenever you're down in NYC, we're usually pretty good at throwing something together.

Actually I am one of those odd people who doesn't like touching or being touched. The last person who hugged me I almost completely freaked out on.

You're not odd...some people have sensory issues and it's more distressing than it would be for others. It's also particularly common for those who are somewhere on the autistic spectrum. I may be completely wrong, but I think there's a pretty good chance I am somewhere on the spectrum even though I might not be diagnosable. I dunno...there's just a lot about me that seems similar to those with Asperger's Syndrome.

^Ding! Spot on! I'm an Aspie (granted a light one) ad when I was younger I hated being hugged. I've grown past it, but it some time. And it's definetly not something to be ashamed of.

Oh tsq, you are awesome, in many ways. Don't you dare think for a sec that we ain't gonna hang out and have loads of fun when I go to NY! :)

I'd love to hug you, Emher. You're like a nice big teddy bear.

You're the kind of person that would be really cool just to have a beer with. :)

Aw, thanks man! :) Too bad I don't like beer much  Don't worry man, we'll go for some kind of drink at some point :techman:

I still have a hard time with it. I try not to be so flinchy about it when I'm with family, but if you catch me in anything but just the right mood, I'm likely to squirm like a trapped animal. The one thing that's embarrassing about it is that I do NOT have a diagnosis and I think my parents may think it's personal against them when it's not.

BTW, that goes for anyone in or visiting NYC, if you don't see a current NYC thread in the meet-ups forum, feel free to send me a PM and I'll see what we can work out.

Both sidious and Robert Maxwell stalk me in real life.

Jono stalks me in real life and on Facebook! I like to stalk cooleddie on FB! Recently, I've added I think a half dozen BBSers to my FB page, like Randi!

In all seriousness, I've gotten together with a number of BBS folks IRL. In addition to Jono, I've hung out with exodus, sidious and Robert Maxwell, as well as donkey and NJOberheim, who aren't currently active here.

So yes, boys and girls, it is possible. Just follow the meet-up tips in that forum and you'll be fine!

I'm nowhere on the autistic spectrum and I don't like being touched. I'll do hugs sometimes, but if I'm not in the mood, I'm not in the mood. I don't see a need to make excuses to anyone about it because that's simply the way I am.

Also I think an NYC meet-up would be awesome to attend.

is there someone you'd LIKE to contact outside of the BBS but are afraid to? (Again, no names please). And if so, WHY are you afraid to?
I would like to meet TheGodBen. Before you ask, yes, I am a fanboy... of a guy posting review threads. About a TV show. On the internet.

Why am I afraid to contact him? Well, as I said - I'm a fanboy :(

On a more serious note, there have been a couple of RL friendships which have formed on teh interwebs, even in WoW - the most notable being two former guildmates of mine who met ingame, started dating and ended up married. They invited me to their wedding and we met up several times after that. Awesome people, it was great to meet them IRL.

You're just using me to get to my Labs!

We should meet up some weekend and have a doggie get together. My wife is knee deep in preparing her research plan for her applications for professor's positions coming up soon, so the less the dogs and I are around on the weekends, the better.

I just need to explain to her why I want to hang out with someone with...ahem...preferences like you. You know, I'm just afraid she'd think something was up if I told her I was friends with a lawyer. :p

Also Dukat's Major (formerly Elmo Dukat), who is married to SPOCKED; they're sort of down the Cape-ish, but not too far away.

I expect most people to be what they say they are, unless proven otherwise. 100% of the time, Tbbs'ers have been exactly as I would expect from their board persona. In fact, most had under-represented themselves and were even more awesome than I had expected. :D

I have met a few dozen posters at a single large meet-up, and a few more personally. All have been stellar people. I'm sure I'll meet a few more if I continue to kick around the joint, and I look forward to that. I enjoy having friends from all around the world... so much to learn from each other, and so much in common, too. Plus, I still enjoy days out, seeing the sites, and pretending to be a tourist for a short time. :D
