Friendship Outside of the BBS

^ I'd much rather be bored with what I do know, than disappointed in what I just found out about.

But if you never try something new, you'll never know if you will like it or not.

But the Good Lord made us all different on purpose. How boring would life be if we all liked exactly the same things. :)

I'll take that risk.

And on the off chance that I do try something new: I'll do it because I WANT to, not due to being forced into it.

Quite.

I mean, if nothing else, there wouldn't be any excuse to flame people, now would there?

Even I'm bored with this conversation now, and I've got nothing else to do.

Let's agree to disagree - I've had this conversation a million times with my family, I really don't need to read it a million times here too.

Some of us like to try new food, some of us don't. Fabulous. Now that's sorted, let's go have some tea :D

Actually, one of them recommended me the place when I moved here and the other was just a giant coincidence.

Giant coincidence is an understatement. We both went to the Hershey Park meetup that just finished. During a conversation I found out that, not only was I moving to the same city he was in, it was the same apartment complex, and, furthermore, it was his old apartment! Weirdest fucking thing to ever happen to me ;)

Alright, I know I'm leaving some people out, but I'll try and make a list:
East Coast Meetups:
mrcoaster
mimic
Lindley
Nevermore/flamingliberal
Jonathan Wally
Exodus
DsZ (who sadly isn't here anymore)
Warp Coil
Hirogen Alpha
Master of Tarquin Hill
Commander Vaughn
The Brew
Sideous618
Robert Maxwell

In London:
Niorah
Jim Gamma
Huntington
Brother Benny/Xeris
Stolen Thunder

In London, special mention has to go to ST (I got to meet my co-mod, that was pretty cool). Xeris, for putting up with the fact that I somehow managed to forget my username, and Niorah for that really cool dinner (judging from PKTrekGirl's post, I take it she has a knack for picking great restaurants :p ). There was at least one other poster in London I would have liked to have met, but she sadly couldn't make it out. Maybe next time (I'm still trying for a next time, I promise).

HAVE BOTH OUR PHONE CONVERSATIONS MEANT NOTHING TO YOU? :(

:guffaw:

Sorry dude, you're going to have to come to DC.

Or I suppose I could go to LA. One of my goals is to attend a meetup over there if I ever make a west coast trip.

By 2008, I felt like my time on TrekBBS had run its course. Maybe it was just the particular chapter I was on that really ran its course.

Next time there's a Boston meet-up, I'm in.

If you see people posting over a long enough period of time, you can get a sense of who they are.

If they're just a walking shtick, relentlessly one-note, or haven't been board member for very long, then I'd be more hesitant. It all depends on the poster.

This might sound like a stupid question but how do you know. You can't see faces here, so when you meet them in real life you know know what you're getting yourself into if it's someone you've never seen before.

I don't. That's the risk but, like any risk, it could turn out good or bad. Go in with no expectations, have a back-up plan, and you won't be disappointed.

At least two of the Bostonians are mods, they were like my co-workers for years (seriously, sometimes being a mod felt like a job where I didn't get paid), they met each other clearly and lived to tell the tale.

So long as you meet in a public place there's nothing to worry about.

This. A thousand times this. Everyone I've met, I've met in a public place, and I've met a lot of folks and not once have I found myself in an inescapable predicament. Hell, not once have I found myself really regretting the meeting, either.
