Friendship Outside of the BBS

grrr. have insufficient time to do more than duck in and out for a couple weeks and I miss all the fun! I've never met anyone from here but think it'd be a hoot! IDIC and all; I do suspect I might not have a lot in common with a lot of you but it'd be fun to moot!

I have spoken with one of you on the phone {{{{{YR}}}}} big squish and I have made some really lovely friends here.

And we sooooo need to do this again SOON!!!!!! I miss you!!

Thanks for the heads-up on worldwide McDonalds, people :bolian:.

Should I travel the world one day (admittedly unlikely atm), it'll be nice to have a fallback should the local food disagree with me .

You might be interested in this short blurb about different McDonald's items around the world. I've had the McAlooTikki, but I don't remember what else I've had.

Some of those sound like fun!

There's nothing like reading about food to get the appetite going

I have only spoken with a few members from BBS outside of the board and it's been pleasant each time. I am still fairly new and don't know many people yet (and vice versa) but I am certainly open to talking to new people and then eventually meeting up if that goes well. I'm pretty social and outgoing so that aspect doesn't bother me, and I came here to have people/friends with whom I can talk Trek. Based on how they think and write, though, there are a few posters who I think I would have a good time with, and a few give me the impression of either kindred spirit or old friend. Perhaps this thread will inspire me to pursue such acquaintances in the future.

But then, you are already aware of the fact that I am positively in love with your country! ;)

I mean, what's not to love? Incredible history, incredible art, incredible music, incredible food, breathtaking and varied scenery (BTW, did I ever tell you that on my last trip, I finally did the Amalfi Coast?), and (speaking of great scenery) the most gorgeous men on earth  . WOW! Plus (and this is maybe the best thing of all), the Italians know how to LIVE LIFE better than any other nationality, IMO. As we have discussed in the past, scheduled events in Italy might not happen on time, but once they begin you are absolutely assured of having a great time! Unless you are one of those terminally inflexible sorts, anyway.
Quoted because I'm positively beaming right now. :D
Are you telling me? As we say in Italy, I'm getting fat just by reading that. :D

(For the foreigners: when something makes you get fat it means that it makes you feel particularly proud.)

I go to meetups when the opportunity arises, and have met perhaps a dozen of you lot that way. Let's see.....

flamingliberal/nevermore
TheBrew
Master of Tarquin Hill
Dennis Bailey
mimic
T'Bonz
Warp Coil
Alidar Jarok
Robert Maxwell
JonathanWally
exodus

Kira's Mom

...I'm sure I'm forgetting a few.

You missed sidious618, Harvey, mrcoaster, DsZ, and Commander Vaughn. Geeze, Lindley!

I actually live in the same apartment complex as two other BBSers.

The Force is strong here.

With nerds.

I've also met some loverly people at meet-ups at D.C., N.Y. and Berkeley.

Did you all just happen to be posters here and then discover that you lived in the same complex? Or did you meet in RL first and then one of you mentioned the BBS and got the others to join?

Actually, one of them recommended me the place when I moved here and the other was just a giant coincidence.

Giant coincidence is an understatement. We both went to the Hershey Park meetup that just finished. During a conversation I found out that, not only was I moving to the same city he was in, it was the same apartment complex, and, furthermore, it was his old apartment! Weirdest fucking thing to ever happen to me ;)

Alright, I know I'm leaving some people out, but I'll try and make a list:
East Coast Meetups:
mrcoaster
mimic
Lindley
Nevermore/flamingliberal
Jonathan Wally
Exodus
DsZ (who sadly isn't here anymore)
Warp Coil
Hirogen Alpha
Master of Tarquin Hill
Commander Vaughn
The Brew
Sideous618
Robert Maxwell

In London:
Niorah
Jim Gamma
Huntington
Brother Benny/Xeris
Stolen Thunder

In London, special mention has to go to ST (I got to meet my co-mod, that was pretty cool). Xeris, for putting up with the fact that I somehow managed to forget my username, and Niorah for that really cool dinner (judging from PKTrekGirl's post, I take it she has a knack for picking great restaurants :p ). There was at least one other poster in London I would have liked to have met, but she sadly couldn't make it out. Maybe next time (I'm still trying for a next time, I promise).

I must be really, really, proud.

Really.

Never met, but I'm in close proximity to daveyinNY and LavianotTsomething.

Why thank you, it was my pleasure. I'm glad you enjoyed the dinner! :)

HAVE BOTH OUR PHONE CONVERSATIONS MEANT NOTHING TO YOU? :(

But when I took my extremely picky nephew to Italy last year, the kid lived for 19 days off of plain cheese pizza, plain spaghetti with red sauce, and McDonalds. I couldn't believe it, because as mentioned earlier, the food in Italy is the best in the world, in my opinion. But that's what the kid lived off of. He would barely try anything new. On the plus side, he was cheap to feed, anyway.
Yeah, I remember when you mentioned it. I'm still baffled at that. And McDonald is not what I think when people say "extremely picky". :wtf:

Just a quick aside, "extremely picky" when used about the eating habits of children, doesn't mean "very particular and wanting only the best". It means "refuses most things and will only eat what he already knows".

It means "refuses most things and will only eat what he already knows".

That sounds like MY eating habits.

seriously. I am not an adventurous person at all, and especially not when I eat. Why do you think that whenever I go to New York, I always eat at the same deli for lunch? I stick to what I know. I don't see anything wrong with that.

I don't either - I'm the same myself. To my way of thinking, if I'm going to be spending money I'd like to make sure it's on something I actually want to eat.

^ I'd much rather be bored with what I do know, than disappointed in what I just found out about.

(seriously. Does everything have to be pushing the envelope? Don't we have the right to normality, at least on occasion? We are constantly forced by society to try everything, to like everything, to do everything, to FUCK everything...we don't dare say that we don't like something, for fear of being labelled "boring". )

I do admit that I used to have the stereotypical view of what British food must be like, the kind of stuff with names like bubble & squeak, toad in the hole, "spotted dick" :wtf:, etc. I'm sure it's not really like that, but just to be safe, I thought I'd ask if London has any kind of food that I am used to, and would actually like. Happily, it would seem that it does. (Although my sister is an excellent cook, just in case!)

(I had no idea that my question would set off such a firestorm, though. :( )

You'll find it easier to find pizza in London than toad in the hole these days :)

As for being adventurous in food  that's not my thing. I like to eat food I like, if I'm enjoying myself what difference does it make to anyone else?

I like going to new places, I like seeing new things, but when I eat I like to go with the familiar. We all need our touchstones when we're somewhere new.
