It would have made as much as BATMAN BEGINS or slightly more had Heath lived to see the premiere and help promote the film. It made what it did in part because of his tragic loss.

But I think it would've made quite a bit more than Batman Begins even had he lived, because BB was a "sleeper" hit, paving the way for the next one.

I think it would have made a lot more than that. Batman Begins did so bad because of the perception that Batman sucked because the last two movies drove the franchise into the ground. The Spider-man movies make $800-900 million worldwide. Even X-Men made $300-460 million worldwide. Batman is as much of an iconic character as Spider-man and more well-known than the X-Men.
So coming off the reception that Batman Begins got, The Dark Knight was poised to do much bigger business than BB since people knew Nolan had done a good job reviving it.
I'm just glad Batman took the title of biggest superhero movie away from Spider-Man. I've never really liked those movies.
I agree with that. Anything that succeeds on the scale of TDK is going to have a few factors contributing to that success, the four main ones in this case being (1) building on the success of the reboot Batman Begins, (2) fascination with Ledger's posthumous turn as the Joker, (3) a very solid, enthralling action movie, and (4) an ability to tap into some of the underlying preoccupations of our society at the time, including fear of random violence and distrust of government.
I really liked Spiderman 1 and 2. I thought that they really were the best comic book movies at the time, though I think Iron Man and TDK have eclipsed them both. And Spiderman 3 was so horrible that I don't know if anyone is excited for #4. Maybe it will reclaim the title of best superhero movie from the Batman Franchise
That is awesome that Star Trek is doing so well! I'm excited that it moved in front of a couple younger "big" movies. It definately has some legs underneath it.
As for TDK, Ledger's death probably contributed, but it didn't make the movie a hit. Making that much money implies that lots of people saw it more than once, and people aren't going to go rewatch a movie simply because it dead guy's in it. It may have gotten some addition people interested early, but Ledger's death isn't worth a vast majority of the box office intake.

With the same creative team behind the sequel, will hopefully be a lock for 300m+ domestic, that if they don't have a mediocre marketing before release.
It would be hard to imagine why they'd change strategy in that regard... What's funny, though, is that I've not seen a Star Trek advertisement in the local newspapers around here for a few weeks.

Yeah, the lack of newsprint ads has annoyed me a little. But only because I saw Wolverine print ads through last week. I doubt it would have changed how much Trek has made. But I still see commercials everyday for Trek during the syndicated reruns of The Simpsons, so I can't complain at all.
I went for my second viewing with my little brother Sunday... so I did my part!
I haven't seen an ad for it in The Washington Post for a while, myself. I thought that to be odd. Word of mouth. How analog.
Yeah. I've seen a couple of spots recently on TV here in NVA. But it seems some some time did pass before the spots started airing again.
